    We hired Alex to perform some basic yard clean-up, including weeding; removal of a hedge, shrubs, a couple small trees, and a chain-link fence; and addition of topsoil and seed to the lawn. Alex offered a competitive price, but his service and lack of work ethic were unacceptable. On many occasions at all stages of our project (initial visit for quote, actual work, follow-up work) he did not show up on the agreed date, usually without any notice. Once or twice it was legitimately due to weather, but other times no explanation was given. On the day he and his crew finally did begin to work, they were interrupted by rain in the early afternoon. Alex tried to convince us that all the work had been completed so that he would not need to return to finish the job. Luckily, we had emailed him a detailed description of the scope of work we expected him to complete before we accepted his offer. It turned out that only about 50% of the agreed work had been completed. When we pointed this out, Alex did agree to return to finish the work (which he did several weeks later, after once again missing a few appointments). At this point we paid him, but soon thereafter we noticed that two trees that we specifically asked to be removed and uprooted had been simply cut off and covered with topsoil. Moreover, a long pole from the chain-link fence we asked him to remove and haul away had been left in the gutter in front of our house. We once again asked him to return to complete the work, and he agreed to do so. To date, he has not yet returned to finish the job and we are very unsatisfied with the quality of Alex's work. [We will update this review if and when the work is completed.] We absolutely CANNOT recommend Alex and encourage you pay the extra money for a professional.

    Alex M. from Manzano Landscaping replied to this review on March 16, 2015:

    Alex: The day this job was initially scheduled (12/06), it began to rain so we had to come back to finish up, which we did a week later (12/15). Before leaving the job site, I walked the yard with the husband who said everything looked good and the wife emailed me the following message "Thanks, Alex. The yard looks great and the fence guys have already started! I'll mail you the check this week. It is being mailed directly from my bank."

    Then I got an email two weeks later, January 2nd, that there were 2 roots that were missed and 1 fence post. I agreed to come back and fix it next time we were in the area, but then we got round after round of snow and we weren't able to work. Today, 3/16/15, was our first day back in the field since the snow melted. I had/have every intention of going back to finish the job as soon as possible. We have been responsive to the homeowner's emails, so I am not sure what prompted them to leave this review knowing that it has been impossible to work in the weather conditions over the last couple of months.

    Alex was very responsive. He is the only one who offered to come out and look at my yard too see what I wanted done and to give a proper estimate. And then after I decided to hire him he was able to do the work within just a few days. He cut back one tree and several large bushes for me. He did a great job. They are all shaped nicely and he was thorough with the clean up as well.

    Manzano Landscaping is amazing! They were friendly and easy to talk to (even when you don't understand your lawn). I've all ready referred them to my father who can't take care of his lawn anymore. Have no doubts, they will take care of you!

    Initial application of so-called top soil was gravel, rocks, debris and grey dust that appears to be construction debris. The company then re-applied top soil and overseeding that was not bad - but did not remove the gravel and debris that they first applied. I had to take on a much more encompassing and expensive lawn project to undo Manzano's damage. Buyer beware!

    Alex M. from Manzano Landscaping replied to this review on October 30, 2013:

    We serviced the entire yard for $700, including grading as needed, getting rid of the roots and overseeding the entire lawn. We used the same soil in the back yard where we did the grading that we used in the area where he says there were construction debris, and the back area didn't have any problems. The job was done on 9/21/2013, which was before a big rain storm came through and washed the seed and topsoil that we brought away. That was beyond our control. Even so, I came back to spread more seed at no charge. We also brought a couple more yards of topsoil/compost mix at the customer's request. When I came out a couple of weeks ago to check the progress of the grass seed, there was plenty of new growth.

    As far as the rocks, there were existing rocks in the yard when we initially came to do the job, and there was nothing in the original quote about cleaning up rocks (see below)
    * leveling and grading areas in front and back yards as needed
    * delivery and installation of topsoil/compost mix
    * aerating and overseeding

    When we came the second time, we raked the rocks up anyway to try to help him repair the storm damage. The bottom line is, we did the job as quoted, then the rain storm caused the damage, and we came back to try to fix it for no extra charge.

    After a month of waiting for the payment, sending emails with getting a response (he said he had baeen out of town), and 3 visits to the property, I told the customer we would be forced to place a lien on the property unless we received payment within one week.

    At this time, he did finally respond, threatening to sue me, saying "I have a bus load of lawyers so if you are implying legal action, no problem there. Let's lawyer up if you are a gambler. You likely will end up buying me a brand new lawn."

    Manzano Landscaping lost time and money on this job, and now the customer is trying to damage our reputation. I hope to have more of our customers rate us on Thumbtack to offset this negative review.
