Mr. Warnstaff’s guided tour of the Painted Hills Monument was phenomenal. His knowledge of the area’s history and his passion for and expertise in photography made the trip quite the educational experience. I learned a lot from him during the 3-day tour and hope to go on another one of his guided tours soon.

I have been a fan of Steve Warnstaff’s Photography for several years. I especially was impressed with his portfolio of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument and his photographs of the North West. I contacted Steve and asked him to lead a group from my local photo club to the John Day area. Steve’s extensive knowledge of the area, the best times to photograph and the vantage points to obtain the highest quality photos for each member of our group, made for a great weekend and hundreds of memorable photos. I would most highly recommend Steve Warnstaff’s services if you want a knowledgably guide, photographer for any part of Washington or Oregon you plan to visit. Especially the Pacific Coast, Mt St. Helens, Or any of the Cascade peaks, The Columbia George, or the Drylands of Eastern Oregon or Washington

Hi Folks, my name is Ron & I am a keen amatuer photographer.I have been published in Canadian National Geographic & won several top awards at photographic club competitions in BC.I mention these facts, not to blow my own horn or for egotistical reasons, but rather to show that I take more than snapshots when I use my camera, & that I look for someone, who is far more talented than myself, has more knowledge & understanding, not only of photography, but of how to operate a camera to it's best capabilities, whether film or digital, yep some folks still use film, not me I changed over years ago,but Steve knows how to handle both.Steve also has the knowledge as to where the best locations are for his workshops,he is very familiar with each & every location
site for his workshops.I did a workshop of Steve's, with another photoclub friend,at the Painted Hills in eastern Oregon, though I didn't do the sunrise, I much prefer the sunsets, the 4:00AM call too early for me,I captured what I thought were some vivid moon shots,we also captured some great landscapes.I have never viewed topography ,like I saw at the John Day Fossil National Park & this was more due to Steve's knowledge of the area & the best times in which to capture the light. To view some of my captures, Google TrekLens & check out my gallery @ RSK,key in North America & they should be easy to find.

A. The most common type of work I have led photographers into were landscapes of the Cascades and the three units of the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument, Columbia River Gorge, and the Cascade Mountains of Oregon and Washington.
A. The only advice I would recommend a customer to look into as they hire a photographic guide would be to check their work and years of experience in the field.
A. My customers should have, and do most often have an idea or specific location they would like to photograph. Once they have looked through my site and read the detailed information I have included within the text they have no difficulty in realizing the worth of a tour guide that has travelled extensively in the area of my expertise
A. My work stands out beyond the normal images you see everyday by my understanding of light, compositional elements, and balance in a scene. I have 30 years of experience with photography, and have worked as a newspaper photographer, published in a Northwest Travel Magazine, and have sold prints to several businesses and hospitals.
A. I like travel and the rugged beauty of the Pacific Northwest, and capturing its essence for everyone to see, as well as allowing others to see beyond what one's eyes percieve as they too capture their insight into the scenes placed before them.
A. My customers have asked me in the past what subject matter is seen in a specific area and what time of day can they expect to see the subjects in the best light? How far is the distance between two points?
A. If I could tell everyone all my locations and the knowledge of the history and geology of the location there would not be a need for my services.
A. I first was volunteering my work for a worldwide photographic group each year for tours through the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument area in Central Oregon, and as word got out about their experiences I was asked if I would lead a group of photographers into this same area for pay.
A New Profession Was Born...
A. I have attended college for photography in a Professional Photo Program, and read most of the new developments in camera and lenses in the field, as well as techniques in shooting in the field.
A. I charge by the day at a set rate, unless, I set up lodging, food, permits, etc. for the trip by the customer.
I use my own vehicle unless the group is larger than 3 people, then I charge for a rental vehicle to accommodate the size of the group, plus fuel charges.
