Kathy is an excellent teacher for both the dog and the human(s) who interact with it. She is knowledgeable in all fields of dog behavior, but is especially gifted in early training and socialization. She has raised a number of dogs from puppy hood both for private clients and for assistance organizations. I personally have known several of the assistance puppies she has raised. I am pleased to see that one of these puppies on a regular basis as an adult assistance dog for a wheelchair-bound friend. It is wonderful to have known this particular dog as a puppy knowing that the firm foundation she received is what enables her be such a wonderfully helpful companion to my disabled friend. All dogs, not just working dogs, deserve this kind of early foundation to help them reach their full potential as loving and beloved family pets.

I have known Kathy as an educator and mentor in early socialization for assistance/service dogs in training when I became a volunteer for PAWS With a Cause, a Michigan-based service dog agency. I began to raise service puppies with PAWS and Canine Companions for Independence and through Kathy’s education, training and support I have been able to expertly socialize, handle and utilize a therapy dog. I have the utmost respect for Kathy as an educator through her background, knowledge and teaching style. She makes learning fun and has always left me with the desire to learn more. Kathy has been working with me and my disabled son in hands-on socializing and training with our dogs for 6 years. The confidence we have developed has been amazing! We have 3 happy and healthy "girls" that have learned to adapt to a variety of situations with Kathy's early socialization techniques. Kathy has the ability to teach with expertise in a supportive manner, always encouraging the learner to stretch their capacity to become an expert. She readily shares her knowledge and has a wonderful way of aligning herself with her "students" in sharing the learning process together. Thanks Kathy for helping me, my son and my three "girls!" I couldn't have done it without you!

A. When I first started, I was surprised to learn how much is known about a dog's developmental stages and how it effects training and adult behavior.
Socialization skills training needs to start early because the pup is learning and practicing adult behaviors all the time...
Wouldn't it be best to have positive experiences be the foundation for adult behaviors?
A. I have more than ten years experience training/socializing service dogs/puppies and their owners.
Helping people understand what they can do - and should not do - with their puppy, helps eliminate unwanted behaviors before they begin.
My own dog has appeared on several TV news/human interest spots to highlight his skills.
A. Creating friendly, well balanced dogs and happy people
A. I see the benefits but how much does it cost?
Initial evaluation of video and one half hour phone consultation (for people who live outside the NW Washington area) is $40. This includes 2 additional email consultations/questions on the same topic. Additional topics/video - $30
Optional In-home initial evaluation (Greater Seattle area only) $40/hr. Packages available, ask for details.
A. Can you describe your ideal client?
Initial consultation - with all family members - will take place before the puppy comes home for the first time.
A. Is it too late to start my puppy on Social Skill Training?
No! Pups and young adult dogs are learning all the time. It is best to start NOW to help eliminate or decrease unwanted future behaviors.
A. What is the difference between dog training classes and Early Social Skills Training?
Social Skills Training focuses on providing positive introductions to places, people and wanted behaviors so that the adult dog is comfortable in a variety of surroundings and accepts new and novel environments encountered later in life more easily.
It does not replace or compete with traditional dog training classes.
