"Steven King has taught both of my kids to play the guitar. I feel we are very fortunate to have a musician/guitarist of his caliber in our area who is also willing to teach. Steven has an incredibly diverse style and extensive background in music education, pedagogy, and theory. He utilizes his own sequence of books and lessons which gives students a strong basis for developing all styles of guitar playing from classical to country to rock. He seems to be in tune and responsive to each students personality and learning style, and kids are encouraged and motivated by his approach. I work at Riverside Middle School and I have recommended Steven enthusiastically to all students who show an interest in playing the guitar. There is no better guitar teacher in this area." -Thomas Powers

I have been taking Guitar lessons from Steven for about 3 months.
I had bought many books and learn to play Guitar CD's by multiple people and worked with it for a couple of years. After my first 30 minutes with Steven I learned more about playing and reading Music than I had been able to learn in the past 2 years. Steven is a Excellent! Teacher and I highly recommend him.

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Don't buy your kid a guitar if you don't know anything about guitars. You may well end up not only with a useless unplayable piece of garbage, but you may well discourage the kid from ever wanting to learn, quitting soon. Consult first with me, or with your professional instructor. My best recommendation for almost anyone new to guitar is buy on the web a 3/4 size NYLON STRING CLASSICAL guitar, not steel string. This guitar you can still find as cheap as $55 including shipping (although many are twice the cost). And although they are fairly cheap made-in-china guitars, the lower string tension of nylon strings allow these to be wonderfully playable guitars that fit hands from young kids to adult! Then have strap buttons and a strap installed (drill pilot holes before screwing in strap buttons!!). The strap will allow the student to get the neck high rather than resting on knee, which is a recipe for eventual failure.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. How to buy a guitar. How to choose the right guitar. What books the instructor recommends before I blindly buy books that look good to my inexperienced eye. Does the instructor charge by the month, or year, or per lesson? Does the instructor try to find make up days during a week when adverse weather or other occasional factors cause missing lesson date? Will the instructor charge me for missed lessons? The value of parenting and keeping a student on steady homework schedule. Does the instructor actually play professionally somewhere where we can bring the family out to listen? How advanced is the teacher, really, in their own playing ability?

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. How to buy a guitar and choose the right guitar within a particular budget. What books the instructor recommends before blindly buying books that look good to my inexperienced eye. How advanced is the instructor's reading ability, treble clef staff?
