Question and answer

Q. Describe the most common types of jobs you do for your clients.

A. Setting up small businesses with less than 10 employees and maintaining ongoing accounting for them.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. The many and varied details regarding monthly, quarterlyand annual reports - what to file, when it's due, how to prepare it. 940 Tax filing is due annually; however, don't forget to deposit quarterly!

Q. What important information should buyers have thought through before seeking you out?

A. Approximate annual volume in dollars, number of employees & type and transaction location(s) - all factor in to number of hours required for the work. Also, what type and structure of business do you have?

Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?

A. I have been a business owner in several different industries so I understand differences in the needs of the business owners. I have also worked in a non-profit school and a church.

Q. What do you like most about your job?

A. I like contributing to the success of small business owners. I enjoy watching people do what they do best, and doing what I do best.

Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?

A. How do I save money by hiring you? My rates are at least 1/3 lower than most CPA firm rates for bookkeeping services. I have prepared tax returns in the past, but leave that to the professionals who keep up on the latest changes while I stick to the basic bookkeeping that CPA's typically do not wish to be bothered with. You save money by hiring specialists to do what they do best - and quickest.

Q. What do you wish customers knew about you or your profession?

A. I keep it very professional, but still want to bond with people. The more I know about my clients, the better job I can do to help them.

Q. Tell us about a recent job you did that you are particularly proud of.

A. I developed a chart of accounts for an entity with personal and business interests in about 13 LLC's in 2 states and recreated almost a year of transactions so there could be a starting spot for a budget I composed, then I set up an accounting system for future use by non-professionals that was simple and concise and trained them to use it.

Q. Describe your most recent project, what it involved, how much it cost, and how long it took.

A. Most recently I recreated the books for a retail store with one location for a period of 2.5 years, including a mid-period transfer of ownership which involved stock and inventory transfers. I determined the value of the business at the time of transfer, which was not as stated in the purchase paperwork. I also contacted various tax agencies regarding issues that had arisen from the prior owners mismanagement of funds and helped bring that to a resolution. The project took almost 3 months and cost around $4,000.

Q. If you have a complicated pricing system for your service, please give all the details here.

A. I offer flat rates for services like payroll & quarterly excise tax. Call for quote - depends on number of employees.

Q. If you were advising someone who wanted to get into your profession, what would you suggest?

A. Get experience part time while in college. When you get out, you have a much better chance of obtaining employment. It also helps solidify what you're learning as you get real life experience while you learn.

Q. What is your greatest strength?

A. Forensic accounting - figuring out what happened, and determining how and why; then knowing how to fix it.
