Don't worry about keys. We've since moved, so there's no need. And to be fair, it's been some time since we last used services. In spite of the issues pointed out, it's pertinent to mention the things that were done well, like watering houseplants, applying medications when they became necessary, and handling a mix up with keys. Seeing as my brother and wife continue using the sitters, someone must be doing something right. It just wasn't working for us.

I used the owner of this business (Jill) at the Sitters for several years but recently made the decision of locating a new sitter to care for my pets. Simply put, in recent months there was such an obvious change in customer service, enough so that I dreaded calling her to make a reservation for pet care. I'd been made to feel scolded for seemingly minor offenses, repeatedly, during care visits. As a result, I was on edge before each trip out of town and on the way home- wondering what I might have done wrong THIS time. Quite frankly, it's bad enough when one must go out of town on business and hire a sitter to care for their pets- but to contend with a caretaker who is either overwhelmed by her duties, is evidently tired and/or cranky, complacent or all of the above. Well, that's just not something that needs to be my concern, is it? I know we all have our bad days, but after the last handful of visits, I decided to throw in the towel. Pet sitting is very much a customer service field, as caring for pets means caring for owners too. And sadly, service is where the owner of this business falls short.
The Sitters's reply
I truly apologize to any client who feels this way about our service. If the person had taken the time to speak to me about their issue, I’m sure we both would have learned something. It’s true that I do have very high standards for pets in our care. So, if any client ever “felt scolded for seemingly minor offenses”, it was something serious that left me with concerns about on-going pet care. The things a client might have “done wrong THIS time” might be situations I would find that jeopardize the health, welfare and/or safety of their pets. For example, I might be “cranky” about excessively dirty pet areas, yard or litter box full of pet waste, pets crated too long or out-of-control tearing or eating things/furniture in the house. It is rare that I would write anything in our daily notes that is not positive...unless there is a real problem. Caring for the owner in this case might mean helping them understand how to provide more consistently wonderful care for their pets. Maybe I could have been more tactful, but apparently over the years, subtlety didn’t work...because if my point was understood, then I would have written about how fantastic it was to see such happy pets again!

The owner's speculative reasoning might make sense, if it were actually the case. Truth be told, my pets, yard and household are immaculate, and their care, the highest priority, with at least three daily visits scheduled when I was away. If the yard was filthy, it certainly wasn't by fault of the pet owner. Perhaps someone wasn't doing their job then? As my sitter was advised the cleaning of pet waste was part of the service request. Visits concluded with happy notes...however, it was the unnecessarily abrasive phone manner and incessant fault finding that was so perturbing.
The Sitters's reply
I am sorry you felt our phone conversations were not satisfying. Since you never mentioned any concerns to me about anything...there was no way for me to have opportunity to apologize, make a change or improve the situation. You know quite well the pet care provided to your pets for years was excellent. I would appreciate you contacting me so I can immediately remove you from our client list and return your keys promptly.

FAQs

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Always make sure the provider is bonded & insured, BBB accredited, has been in business at least 3 yrs, doesn't drive a car with advertising on it. Get references from vet or groomer. Must have clearly identified emergency backup plan...never hire anyone who works alone!
