I teach piano to students of all ages and levels, from beginners to advanced.

I have many years of experience teaching piano, including the aural and keyboard skills class at WWU.

I am a professional pianist and singer who is nationally and state certified.

My foundation for teaching is classical music, but I think it is important to make sure my students are well-rounded musicians, learning how to improvise and play other styles or genres of music.

I want them to be able to function and be confident in many different musical settings!

I graduated from Western Washington University, and I am a member of the Washington State Music Teachers Association, Bellingham Chapter, and serve as vice president and webmaster.

Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Make sure you come prepared to your interview with the prospective teacher. Know what you want out of your lessons, so you can ask the right questions. Request a trial lesson so that you can see whether you are a good fit for each other. Make sure that you ask for references from current and previous students.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. As with anything, you definitely get out of it what effort you put into it, i.e., practice and research. But make sure you don't overwhelm yourself with extremely long practice sessions. It is better to split up your practice time into shorter sessions so that you come away feeling refreshed.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Ask about their professional experience. Are they a performer? How long have they been teaching? What is their approach to teaching? Are there any method books used? Are they a certified teacher? Do they have any affiliation with a music teachers association? How do they keep up with their professional development?
