If they start sketching during the first meeting, hire somebody else! They aren't taking the time to get to know you, your site, your budget, and any existing conditions that may influence the design.
- What questions should customers think through before talking to professionals about their project?
That an architect's job isn't to pretty-up a box. We bring creative skills, technical skills, and lots of experience with construction to help their project be successful. It is possible to build a project cheaper than an architect would approach it, but that cheaper version won't add as much value to the property, and can even detract from it, and it will have more long term problems than a project designed as an architect would approach it.
