I provide drum and percussion lessons at my home studio for all ages, all styles, everything from jazz to rock, funk, soul, R&B, Latin, Brazilian, New Orleans, African, reggae, hip-hop, etc.

A little about me:

I am the drummer and percussionist for Juno award-winning, Canadian band, The Paperboys, regularly touring in Europe, also in Canada and the US.

I create my home in the historical Ballard neighborhood of Seattle, where I instruct drummers of every age. A proud endorser of Protection Racket Drum Cases and Istanbul Agop Cymbals, I also perform regularly with various other local bands like Cordaviva, Sí Limón, and in musical theatre productions.

My passion lies in performing, creating, teaching, and experiencing music of all styles. My greatest influences have been going to concerts, traveling, and listening to much records during college.

Growing up in Southern California, I began studying private drum lessons at age 8 and proceeded through high school. In 2003, I changed location to the Pacific Northwest to go to the University of Puget Sound where I performed in underground jazz, percussion ensemble, some small jazz combos, and an energetic funk band composed of seven good friends.

At UPS, I majored in International Business, minored in Spanish, and studied jazz history and world music. Throughout college, I studied Latin percussion for Afro-Cuban and Salsa music. Similarly, I became enthralled by Brazilian music and have journeyed to Brazil two times to study and experience their captivating music. A substantial portion of my record collection is made up of records purchased in Brazil.

Needless to say, I love music and I am confident I can provide inspiration while helping you attain your goals, whether you desire to become a professional, gigging musician, or just learn to play your favorite songs.

Sam is obviously a gifted percussionist, but, more importantly, an excellent teacher. I am a beginner latin percussionist, and really appreciate Sam's patience and ability to keep me involved and wanting more. I've had other instructors, but Sam is so engaging and attentive to my interests and frustrations, he rises above the others. With his exceptional instructional skills, reasonable rates, and impressive performing resume, he is an obvious choice for anyone wanting to learn percussion.

Sam’s teaching has helped me go from just struggling to keep a beat to incorporating new techniques and styles into my playing in only a couple months. He’s a versatile drummer and great about teaching me what I want to learn while keeping focus on the finer, technical aspects, and keeping it interesting. Lessons are always fun and comfortable and his teaching studio set up is great. Highly recommended teacher.
