Sorry this pro can’t do your job, but we know other pros who can.
Introduction: We stand out because of our customer-service-based approach. We take the time to answer any and all questions that the customer may have, so that there are no surprises at the end. We view each customer as a long term relationship, not just a job. We make every attempt to pay attention to detail. We are always just a phone call or e-mail away. The thing I like most about what I do is the interaction with the customers. I also enjoy the feeling that I have from seeing or hearing about a satisfied customer. I enjoy working with the wood and seeing a finished project at the end. It is amazing to see where the job started and then see where it has ended.

Hired on Thumbtack

DJ came to the house and provided a simple bid based off of square footage that was easy to understand and accurate (as opposed to the other bids which were just a single number that appeared to have been pulled out of the air). After asking LOTS of questions about the refinishing process, I was very comfortable with his knowledge and contracted him to extend our current hardwood floor in addition to refinishing the existing. Now we have double the hardwood as before, and it was blended so seamlessly you would never guess one section is 35 years older than the other. The best part is he was able to do the work while my wife was out of town on business, AND he completed on time as contracted. Over the years I’ve worked with a lot of people in the trades, and can honestly say I feel I got what I paid for and more. Seldom these days can you get high quality work at a fair price. Thanks for the experience.

Let me first start off by saying that I'm very particular about my house. I have done most of the work myself, and have very high expectations for the finished product. I believe in paying for quality over quantity. I probably could have done the hardwood floor installation myself, but chose to hire a professional to make sure it looked perfect. Another note. I was having 200 square feet of flooring done, but ordered 260 square feet of flooring. I wanted to make sure we had enough in case there were flaws in some boards, plus have some left over for the future if I ever needed to make a repair. That all being said, I was a little less than satisfied with my dealings with DJ. Work started on Friday, and I was waiting for him to arrive so that I could leave for an appointment. He showed up 30 minutes late - not the end of the world, but an inconvenience. Punctuality is an important characteristic in a small business. If I want someone to just show up whenever they thought necessary, I would have hired Home Depot. I returned after a couple of hours, and they had removed the old laminate wood floors. There was a decision to be made. Under the laminate wood floors, was vinyl flooring on top of an extra layer of plywood (in addition to the subfloor). We made the decision to forego the underlayment, and nail down the new hardwoods directly to the vinyl flooring. For the rest of the afternoon on Friday, they laid the beginnings of the new flooring. Understandably, the first boards are the hardest, because you need to fit them into all of the odd angles and edges as well as door ways. They laid about 20 square feet or so. At the end of the day, I reviewed the work that had been done with DJ. I noted a lot of the gaps between the boards were fairly wide. I asked for them to be snugged up, and DJ tried telling me that this was what I should have expected from pre-finished wood (I was installing bamboo flooring that was already finished). I couldn't agree with that. I requested that he pull up the boards, and make sure the gaps are snug. After a bit of back and forth, he agreed to redo the work. They returned on Sunday to continue the project (again about 30 or 40 minutes late). I decided to have a very direct conversation explaining that I would prefer they took their time, and did a quality job. If that ended up costing me a few more bucks, I would rather do that. They removed most of the boards they had installed on Friday, and reinstalled them. This time, they were nice and snug. They continued installing the flooring throughout the day on Saturday. My wife and I were outside doing yard work all day, so we weren't monitoring their work as they were going. This was apparently a big mistake. I came back in the house to see that they were almost 75% complete. The problem? There was a single box of boards (20 square feet) that had an easily visible lighter shade of stain. They had installed them one after the other, from one end of our kitchen to the other. We now had a stripe down the center of our kitchen, about 15" wide (3 boards). DJ said he didn't even notice. Even after I pointed it out, he still didn't see a problem with it being different. He said "we just pull the boards out of the box, and install them". He made it sound like they were brainless minions, and weren't capable of noticing defects in the materials. After about 10 minutes of going back and forth, and trying to get him to understand that this wasn't acceptable, he finally gave in. They began removing the boards - about 40 or 50 square feet. During this process, lots of boards were getting damaged. Some could be reused because the damage wasn't visible, and others were so damaged that they needed to be discarded. At this point, they needed to come back for a third day to finish up. When they left, I inspected all of the installed flooring, and made notes for DJ the next morning. When he returned the next morning, I explained the areas that I had concerns with, he didn't have any problem with them. He made almost all of the adjustments (they were fairly minor). Summary: The final product was acceptable. It took a lot of micro-management on my part - which I wasn't very pleased with. I wanted to pass the headache of installing the floors onto someone else. Although we had disagreements throughout the process, he was very nice, and ultimately did what needed to happen. There were a couple of accidents that caused damage to a few things. The threshold to the front door was damaged beyond repair, it will need to be replaced. One of the window sills was hit with a hammer, and needs to be replaced. He asked me to assess whatever I thought was reasonable, and deduct it from the amount owed. That was fine, but ultimately, just more for me to deal with. I would not hire DJ again. I prefer to hire people that share my high expectations, and can work without needing me to be directly involved.
DJs Hardwood Floors's reply
I thank this customer for his sincerity and what he feels is his honesty just a few comments, yes i was late the first day i got caught up in traffic i called his cell to advise and had to leave a message as he did not answer, The following two days I was there at 8:30 the appointed time. In response to the "Brainless Minion" comment from customer, this was a pre finished floor and the color is what the color is, I did not make the floor I open the box and if there is no "damage" to the board I install it simple as that. there were contrasting colors in all the boards. when he mentioned this I tried to advise him that no one opens every box to install but takes boxes randomly, I kept telling him whatever he wanted to do I would do to make him happy we only went back and forth for 10 minutes because it took him that long to say he wanted them out. The customer is a nice person but is one of those people that has expectations that more often than not exceed reality! Finally, the damaged items were paid for by me, I am sorry they happened but i was responsible for what happened don't think for a moment that he had to pay for them. Also, I never asked him for another dime to cover the extra time spent removing and replacing boards that most people's opinion would have been acceptable. He mentioned that some of this work took place on Saturday, not so, we are closed on Saturday's and have never worked on one. Work was done Fri, Sun, Mon of Memorial Day week end. Although he says he would not hire me again, because he prefers to work with people that share his high expectation and work with without him being directly involved. I would, even though he is the most difficult customer I have ever had in 20 years of business, work for him again. So Sir, when you can't find anyone fitting in that category, GIVE ME A CALL!
