Gust found us a great piano teacher for our three kids, and has reliably managed that connection for years now. The kids are happy and progressing, which is the bottom line.

Question and answer
Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?
A. Consider what you want your child to get out of piano lessons. A good experience should help her or him establish a life-long love, appreciation, and engagement with music, as well as helping to develop basic skills. Will your teacher be able to meet your child where she is? Will your teacher have an open attitude to different music that will be passed on to your child? Will your teacher help your child become interested in making her own music, rather than just practicing standard repertoire?
Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?
A. Many piano teachers get burned out in a relatively short time, but keep teaching out of economic necessity. Make sure your teacher has an approach that allows her/ him to change and grow along with her students. This way the interest and engagement will continue to happen for both student and teacher.
Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?
A. What is your experience?
What is your attitude towards music?
What is your attitude towards teaching?
Are there specific skills that you think my child should develop?
Besides skills, what else will you help my child with?
Do you help coordinate performance opportunities for your students?
Are you a practicing musician yourself? Do you still maintain a creative practice in addition to teaching?
