Still reading? Excellent! My name is Brett Hallonquist, owner and Creative Director of Atomic Design Lab. I launched Atomic Design Lab more than ten years ago to fill a need: provide all the design capabilities of a big firm, minus the big firm. The Lab is test-tube in size, but so very potent: A-level, keen, accomplished, responsible, experienced and super crazy dang good. Since opening the doors, my mission has been to create uncompromising design, at a fair cost, for clients who understand the value of quality graphic design.
I have a passion for this business. For nearly 20 years, I've proven my skills in senior positions at both ad agencies and design firms. Design isn't just a job, it's a way of life for me. In any medium, whether it be identity, print, web, advertising, packaging. I love a good challenge. The more difficult the problem is to solve, the better my work. I consider my identity work to be my true calling - the challenge of achieving simplicity, the proper voice, and an enduring quality that stands the test of time.
Thanks for visiting. I hope to add you to my growing list.
Question and answer
Q. Why does your work stand out from others who do what you do?
A. I am uncompromising when it comes to creating design solutions. It's easy to whip out a mediocre design that has no thought, relevance, voice, balance, tone... but it takes experience, knowledge and plain 'ol hard work to create great designs – consistently. You'll also notice that my work doesn't have a particular style – each and every client, job and task has it's own unique problem that needs to be visually solved. By listening closely to the clients needs and becoming a partner vs. a vendor, I ensure my clients that they're work won't look like anything else. Lastly, I make sure the entire process is a fun and rewarding experience so you'll keep coming back for more.
Q. What do you like most about your job?
A. I like the fact that I get to go to work everyday, think up cool stuff, shape my own destiny and be my own boss. Ever since I was a kid, I've been a doodler, creator, problem-solver and fixer-upper of all things imaginable. I'm all right-brain and my job let's me use my creativity to let those creative juices flow freely. But most importantly, I enjoy when a client is ecstatic about my work and their business (and mine!) thrives because it.
Q. What questions do customers most commonly ask you? What's your answer?
A. My clients come to me because of my work, but the first question they ask is, "how much will it cost?" ... A valid question that I'd also ask if I was on the other side of the fence. My short answer: "it's up to you and your budget." If a client comes to me and says "I need a wicked-great logo (Starbucks quality), business cards, a brochure and website, but have only $500." My response would be is that they perhaps needs to educated on the cost of doing business. Sounds blunt, but I'd be doing them and myself a disservice by doing that work for that budget. Sure, there may be designers that will do the work for that amount, but you'll get what you pay for and it will end up costing the client in the long run. I tell new clients who are unaware of the design process that, "Good design costs just as much as bad design." If the above mentioned $500 is their budget, I understand and will help guide them in how to best allocate their dollars.
