Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Ask plenty of questions. Is this your main business, what else do yo do, how many years have you been doing this job, any references, what can I expect, etc. Do you provide equipment, or instruction, (this can be worked into your day if the Guide knows it in advance). A Guide's reputation usually precedes him, if he's good, you'll know others who have used his services, ask those friends about him. Weather and time of the year can greatly affect the success of your trip, take what the water will give you on any particular day.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Become a more proficient fly caster, don;t think you can learn it while fishing - there's too much other stuff to learn while fishing other than fly casting. Take some lessons and practice more than once. There is nothing more exasperating to a Guide than having to give you a casting lesson when you hired him to take you fishing. There's nothing wrong with asking for some casting advice while on the water, but come prepared to fish, it will make for a more pleasant day and you will learn more.

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. Be honest with the Guide about your experience, he can only provide you with the correct services based on your experience level. There is nothing wrong with being a beginner, a good Guide will tailor his trips to maximize you learning experience.
