Understanding tai chi
Tai chi, also called tai chi chuan, is a noncompetitive, self-paced system of gentle physical exercise and stretching. To do tai chi, you perform a series of postures or movements in a slow, graceful manner.
Who can do tai chi?
You can practice tai chi regardless of your age or physical ability — tai chi emphasizes technique over strength. In fact, because tai chi is low impact, it may be especially suitable if you're an older adult who otherwise may not exercise.
Benefits of tai chi... Reducing anxiety and depression,
Improving balance, flexibility and muscle strength, Reducing falls in older adults, Improving sleep quality
Lowering blood pressure, Improving cardiovascular fitness in older adults, Relieving chronic pain
Increasing energy, endurance and agility
Improving overall feelings of well-being
Getting started with tai chi
Wondering how to get started in tai chi? Even though you can rent or buy videos or books about tai chi, consider seeking guidance from a qualified tai chi instructor to gain the full benefits and learn proper techniques. A tai chi instructor may also be able to teach you about the philosophy underlying this relaxation technique.
A tai chi instructor can teach you specific positions and how to regulate your breathing. An instructor also can teach you how to practice tai chi safely, especially if you have injuries, chronic conditions, or balance or coordination problems.
For the more defense minded individual we provide online home study karate videos at dragonkenpo dot net. Our virtual dojo program has been in helping students world wide since 2004 so we have the experience to help you reach your goals.

There are Tai Chi instructors and then there are people who've done a few classes and think they can teach. Ron is the real deal. You will know why you are doing each movement a certain way and learn the benefits of Tai Chi as well as having a lot of fun.
He's also a very nice, genuine man

After training with Coach Pfeiffer in Dragon Kenpo for several years I started looking at Tai Chi training. I shared my training experience with my (now 87 year old) mom and some of her friends. They did not find the training overly taxing. My mom noticed that her balance was greatly improved with the Tai Chi. She got away from it for awhile and began experiencing balance issues once more but now that she is back with her Tai Chi exercises her balance problems are much improved.

I had an interest in Tai Chi for many years, but had difficulty finding a school with a good schedule and location. I started taking classes with Coach Ron in the spring of 2008, for the mental focus and stress reduction benefits of Tai Chi. His classes focus also on the physical health benefits and teaches sets created by Dr. Paul Lam based on the Sun style of Tai Chi. I found myself benefiting in better balance, better leg strength, more energy, and less back pain. As a result, I have reduced my visits to my chiro to 3 or 4 a year instead of monthly, to the delight of the chiro doctor who also supported taking the classes. I find climbing stairs is easier and I am not winded when I reach the top.
Ron's style is one of patience and progress. He focuses on teaching students not only learning the moves but performing them correctly so a student's health benefits. He teaches Tai Chi for arthritis, back pain, and osteoporosis, as well as traditional forms. He encourages everyone to educate themselves by reading and learning from other sources about Tai Chi and healthy living.
The school is also an annual participant in the World Tai Chi & Qigong Day held in the spring. Its always fun and a great way to show others Tai Chi and its benefits.

A. Please carefully check the background of your instructor. It takes some years and good mentors to reach a level of skill in demontration and teaching that truely benefits the student. A martial art history using means that the teachers will know the movements and the purpose within the forms. A good teacher will adapt the lessons to the student and make them feel at ease. If you are asked to do something weird or apparently useless you should be able to ask for an explaination of why, if not get out of there quick!
A. As a martial arts instructor my interest in Tai Chi has been in it's benefits to myself and my students. Very simply, to teach the depth of tai chi means to understand the underlying purpose in the movements. New students find a comfortable environment in which to explore the arts and more the advanced find there is always more to learn.
A. There are many aspects which I enjoy but chief among them is the moment went a student will look at me and go "Oh, yes! I get it." Those are most rewarding moments since it takes real effort on the part of the trainee to progress and improve their movements.
A. I was having some knee issues and one of my students suggested I investigate tai chi. At first I resisted but after some checking I realized this was the missing part of what I do. I also teach karate so the tai chi was the perfect compliment.
A. Every couple of years I take refresher training just to make sure that I am on track. This year (2010) I will be going to a seminar in Chicago.
I just sponsored a Tai Chi for Arthritis seminar and will be attending ongoing Tai Chi instruction in Terra Haute IN this June.
A. Tai Chi is now being studied by the scientific community. My teaching is based on the science behind the health improvement so people now can research for themselves and find out why this is a great choice for lifetime fitness.
A. I do spring and fall mini courses at the University of Wisconsin at Parkside. These act as a sort of community outreach so we can spread the word about this amazing healing art of tai chi.
