Question and answer

Q. What advice do you have for a customer looking to hire a provider like you?

A. Always ask to have the size of the inside and outside runs of the kennel. Ask what kind of care they provide, is there an outside exercise area or do they just say that they walk your dog, do they really do it? When you pick up your dog is it anxious and hyper or happy and relaxed? This will tell you a lot about the kind of care that has been provided. Your dog should be happy, not trying to get away from the place, and should be relaxed even tired from running and playing and not being kept in a little box for days on end. Are they clean or do they smell like their elimination? If they smell badly, they have been left alone and not been properly taken care of.

Q. If you were a customer, what do you wish you knew about your trade? Any inside secrets to share?

A. Meet the people that are actually taking care of your pet. Go into the facility and see where your pet is being kept. Is the facility clean and tidy? Are all the dogs relaxed or anxious? Look at what type of bedding that is provided, is it clean? Look at the food bowls are they clean, with fresh water? Is there a place the dog can run and burn off energy? If you want your dog to to be treated just like at home, do they have a suite with furniture, radio, TV chairs, couches, etc.? Watch other dogs as they leave, how are they acting, what do they look like?

Q. What questions should a consumer ask to hire the right service professional?

A. What services do you provide with your kennel? Do you personally take care of each pet, spending personal time with them? How much? What do you do if a dog is afraid or acting agitated? Do you work with them after-hours or forget them after you close until the next morning? Do you have a supervised free-run and play area? How are your kennels furnished? Do you take large dogs? How do you take care of old dogs?
