Introduction: I taught HS English 26 years and 2 1/2 more at a community college. I'm now in my 8th year of tutoring in a college writing lab, and I love helping teens, college students, and adults improve their writing. I'm good at finding writing approaches/solutions and helping students enjoy the process. For example, I taught a 45-minute lesson in a professor's composition class on a combination of topics that seems contradictory: how to elaborate ideas and still be concise. In addition, I've tutored and advised others in writing or revising their resumes (where conciseness is absolutely imperative). I love the written word, people, and using instructive, humorous examples to illustrate lessons about writing (perhaps a punctuation rule, how to set up a thesis statement, simplifying the complex).

Frank is an excellent tutor and mentor. I had the absolute pleasure of working with him at the San Antonio College Writing Center where he was an Academic Program Specialist and certified CRLA writing tutor. Working with Frank was great because he took his time and never got frustrated with me, even when I could not understand something for the first, second, or eighth time around. Frank was able to word and explain grammar, punctuation, and style to me in a simple way that empowered me to become a confident writer. He showed me how to convey my thoughts in the most clear, direct, and simplified way. As well as an amazing writing tutor, Frank was -- and still is -- a great friend and mentor. His conversations were always enriched with a witty and encouraging sense of humor. Outside of work, Frank was just as hilarious, yet he maintained a certain level of professionalism which made him a stand up guy. I am sure your experience working with him on your writing will be just as great and fruitful as it was with me and every other writer he empowered at the SAC Writing Center.

I thought Frank did a good job of helping me come up with ideas and he did so in a way that they felt like mostly my ideas. This made me feel smart. Frank helped me brainstorm and polish my college essay for A&M, where I will be transferring in the fall. Without him it's possible I would have had to settle for my second choice college. Whenever I need help with a paper I go to Frank before any other English tutor, and I have even altered my schedule when I have a paper due so as to be in the tutoring lab at the same time as Frank. I highly recommend Frank.

I first listen and take a few notes to determine the student's concerns/needs. From there, we determine some approaches and strategies. If there is a specific topic or assignment the student is working from, we will read and review that closely before and during our session/s.
