FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I have set fees for things like replacing a broken zipper(in a ski jacket, $20 and up) or shortening a pair of jeans ($8 and up). some projects need to be done time and materials because there are unknowns ($16.50/hour). I always explain the parameters in such a case. my fees for teaching are intentionally low. Hourly rates depend on whether it is a private or semiprivate lesson and on how much supervision is needed. Sometimes I can accept barter for lessons(I really need a handyman).
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Generally, we have a short phone interview during which the client explains what (s)he wants. I ask questions to clarify. If I think I can provide the service the client wants, we arrange an appointment at my studio where I will do any needed pin fitting or further information gathering. at that time I also give either an informed estimate or a time and materials rate at that time.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been sewing since I was a tiny girl. My mother and grandmother were seamstresses and quilters. I was forbidden to take sewing classes in school as they were afraid I would learn slovenly habits. :-) I have, however, as an adult taken college classes and endless seminars and courses. For many years I did custom dress and suit-making and have a good understanding of how such garments should be constructed. Though I no longer make custom garments, the skills I learned and used help me choose how to approach your alterations for the best results. If you want a custom garment or costume, consider letting me teach you how to make it yourself. Teaching sewing is now the larger part of my business and I would enjoy helping you achieve your goals. You will be surprised how quickly you can learn to sew--and you get to use my very cool equipment and machines to do so.
