FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I have a base rate that begins at $30/hr and can go up to $50/hr depending on the kind of teaching I am being asked to do, the level of preparation outside of the lesson time, and the time it takes to travel to the client. For any commute time over 20 minutes round trip, I charge $15 an hour for the commute time or $5 for every extra 20 minutes of commuting. For example, for a basic lesson that requires no extra input and is a 20 minute drive away, I would charge $35 for the first hour and $30 for any additional hours. I do offer discounts for clients who want a standing appointment each week.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
The first thing I determine is what the parent or student's goals are in terms of the learning support they are seeking. I then evaluate whether those goals are something I can help the student achieve and how long it may take to achieve them based upon the current skill level of the student, the kind of homework support the student has, my knowledge and skill level, and the frequency of lessons the parent or student would like to maintain. I use these factors to communicate what I think I can do to help and how I think I would best be able to do that. I feel it is important to discuss expectations and realistic goals so that the student does not continue to experience defeat and frustration.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I earned a bachelors in English with a focus on language and literacy. I then went on to post bachelorette studies to complete a teacher preparation program which was the same amount of credits one would do for a master's degree. I studied learning modalities, teaching theory and strategies, how people learn and what gets in their way. I studied how to be a good teacher.
