I worked under Adam for about three years, and had a really great experience with him as my manager. I had worked in the industry for about seven years before joining Adam's team, and my experience with his company was the most organized and well thought out working environment I had, or have yet, to find myself in. As a superior, he was always receptive to feedback, which I find to be an invaluable quality in anyone that finds himself in a place of leadership or authority. He also has a knack for drawing out the important aspects of a situation, and the ones that can be left behind, which not only made him the perfect person to be directing a business, but also the perfect person to be consulting small businesses.

When I started planning to open my coffee shop I sought help from Adam McGovern. Adam started multiple successful and highly esteemed coffee shops here in the coffee Mecca Portland, Oregon. Adam also is a coffee legend. He won world barista championship a few years back and he's a pretty cool cat too. I needed a business plan so we sat down to determine the best course to write it. I did my research and started writing. We decided that I would turn over whatever I would write to him to look over and give his expertly advice. With Adam's help I had one of the most solid business plan anyone could ever have. With that plan I was able to acquire the loan needed to open my coffee shop. Now I own one of the top and most respected coffee shop in Portland and I definitely could not have done it without Adam's professional help and experience. In my time working for him and since, I’ve found Adam to be a wellspring of insight. From business planning to day-to-day operations to economic strategy development, Adam brings a high level of experience and a stellar track record. He’s insatiably curious about optimization—never afraid to tinker and test—but he’s also practical and intuitive to the degree every successful small business owner must be. I believe he achieved that initial success, primarily, through good old-fashioned hard work and a lot of it. It’s his ability to untangle cause, effect, bias, etc. and open the aperture that makes him such a valuable adviser. I’ve made the best two choices in this new year: one, deciding that I need a career and life coach and the second, choosing Adam McGovern to be my coach. He’s a really cool guy and has lots of knowledge in business. He’s sincere about helping me achieve what I need to do to get to where I want to be. He asks really great questions, helping me organize my thoughts and giving me a great understanding of what I want most. He truly understands the entrepreneur’s mind and what's needed to help them achieve their goals. He’s given me homework assignments and thinking tools that I’m ready to apply to my life the moment after our meeting. I look forward to our conversations on a weekly basis. What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My time and experience are worth $135/hr to me at the moment, but I consider each request individually and often offer a flat fee or trade
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I take an initial 45-minute consultation free of charge, either in person or by phone if meeting in person isn't possible. On the basis of that consult, I'll draft a proposal letter for you outlining the scope of services and a preliminary schedule, which you can accept or modify as you see fit.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I became one of the most celebrated figures in Portland's coffee scene through my companies Coffeehouse Northwest, Sterling Coffee, and Coffee Roasters United. I've studied economics, business management, data analysis, marketing, sales development, nutrition, exercise science, and game theory and applied lessons from each to my life and to those I've consulted with in my 12 year career.
