I first joined Halau Na Pua Lehua I Ka Ua Noe in February of 2016 and I have loved the experience. I first heard of this halau through mele.com. It was one of the only halaus in the IE. A few years later, I saw them compete at E Hula Mau. I joined a few years later, after my friend joined. As someone who has no experience dancing hula, it has been challenging but the girls in the Wahine class have been amazing and very helpful. It's a family feeling and Kumu is very accommodating to first timers. My original plan is to practice, become comfortable with the movements/techniques and more confident in the chants, and then venture into performing in a year (or two haha). Although the leaders will encourage you to perform at the local shows, there's no pressure. They offer monthly workshops to increase your knowledge on traditional Hawaiian practices (including lei and ipu making, chanting, etc), in addition to the weekly performance classes. As I mentioned, it's been a great experience as a first timer and I'm looking forward to continuing to grow as a dancer and haumana. Halau stands for school so know that here at Na Pua Lehua, Kumu and the alaka'i really try to instill the knowledge, culture, socialization, passion and love that any teacher would have towards the subject matter (hula). So come prepared to learn... and sweat. Basics can be a beast. :)

I started dancing for Kumu Keoni at about 9 years old. At now 22 years old I am still having just as much fun learning about the Hawaiian culture and dancing hula with all my hula brothers and sisters. Between the shows, competitions, and different events you get the whole experience. I've had the opportunity to dance at Disneyland, compete at competitions all throughout California (and win), and have made lifelong friends. I couldn't imagine myself anywhere else!
