- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?I assess the student's learning style and interests, and the student begins playing the piano at the very first lesson. I use the Piano Adventures method books, which move at a steady pace and allow the student to learn and have fun at the same time. I also provide each student with an assignment book, where I list the exercises and pieces he/she should practice each day. I ask students to practice for 5-10 minutes every day in the beginning; just a few minutes is better than none at all, and a strong habit of daily practice is established form the very beginning.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I have a colorful and varied education! I am a pianist who studied piano from the age of 5, following in the steps of my grandmother who was an accomplished musician, a music teacher, and a church organist, and my father, who played saxophone and clarinet in the army band. In my home, music was a central part of my life; we spent many Saturdays gathered around the piano, my brother on drums, and my sister singing my father's favorite jazz standards, popular radio hits, show tunes, and music we composed ourselves. In high school, I sang in choir and performed in school musicals, as well as accompanied school performances on piano. I continued to sing in choirs and play piano in college, where I pursued English and Library Science, and I eventually obtained certification as a School Library Media Specialist in order to fulfill my love of working with children. As a navy wife and mother, I moved every two years, and devoted most of my time to raising my children. My youngest studied violin for ten years, and as I helped her to practice for countless hours, learn music theory, and later accompany her on the piano as she developed into a talented singer and performer in musical theater, I realized I needed to go back to my musical roots and become a music teacher. I haven't looked back.
- What types of customers have you worked with?I have worked with children as young as four, elementary and middle school students, children with autism, and adults.
