FAQs
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
My standard rate varies per hour, as thumbtack exposes me to clients who need creative editing, proofreading, tutoring, and other opportunities. Each job will vary by type, and I do my best to charge what is average for the position and region. In special circumstances I'd be happy to work at a flexible rate. Every situation is different, and it is important to me to do my best to accommodate my customers. I'm open to negotiating!
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
Assuming the student is a minor, I would meet with the parent to discuss their child's needs, assess their academic history and grades. If possible, I would like to contact their teacher, too. Then, I'd meet with the student and build rapport, find out about their passions and talents, and watch them do their homework briefly, uninterrupted. This would give me a sense of their own style, and what is helping or hindering their studies. I could then address each area of weakness at a time, and find a strong alternative method for building up their skills.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have tutored professionally with an ESL company, worked in after school programs, volunteer youth programs, summer camps, and work now as a substitute teacher. I graduated with a degree in sociology, especially focusing on educational and social inequality.
