A Vagabond's Journey Counseling
About this pro
At some point in our life journey, we realize there isn't a manual to show us how to make our lives work the way we had hoped. We find ourselves navigating difficult relationships or unexpected tragedy. Others of us feel mired in a loss of meaning or a deep uncontrollable fear. Whatever the struggle, you do not have to do this alone. I, Fred DuMez-Matheson, LMHC, would consider it a privilege to journey together with you. I believe that in the relationship that we form together, we can access your wisdom and mobilize your resilience and resources in order for you to move towards a fuller, richer life. Our relationships define us. Through relationships we either thrive or are harmed. In our efforts to protect ourselves we often perpetuate the harm. Our work together provides the environment to become aware of the relational trauma that you have experienced and learn ways to reconnect relationally so that you can flourish. Children and adolescents face difficult emotions and issues they are ill-equipped to bear. Play is the language of the child and becomes a vehicle for counseling. I provide a safe space for your child to be heard, both in their words and through what their behavior is communicating. Therapy provides a unique opportunity to enter into the story of those who have taken the courageous step to ask for help and work towards change. It is my honor to come alongside another and bear witness to their agony and triumphs. Therapy allows me the privilege to provide an empathetic environment to invite an individual to safely bring to the surface those core issues that need to be faced in order to allow them to flourish.

- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?I offer a free 20 minute introductory session. Afterwards, 50-min sessions are $85 for individuals and $100 for couples or families.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?Counseling is a process based on trust and confidentiality. It takes time to develop a trusting relationship. I provide a free 20 minute introductory session that allows us to determine if we are the right fit for each other. There is a disclosure form available on my website that explains payment, appointments, and other key details. There is also a packet of questions that allows you to provide me with important details that will aid me in offering the services you need. If you are using insurance to pay, this information will allow me to provide the insurance company with the diagnosis they require for reimbursement. The early stages of counseling allow you to communicate your concerns and the hopes you have for change.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?I received a Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology from The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. I had previously been a secondary math and science teacher. I worked several years for Atlantic Street Center in Seattle's Rainier Valley. This job took me into the schools to work with adolescents and children and their parents. During this time I also worked at The Seattle School as an assistant instructor of graduate counseling students. I achieved my Licensed Mental Health Counselor status by accumulating sufficient counseling hours and passing a national board exam. This license (LMHC) is a status provided by Washington State Department of Health and is recognized by insurance companies for reimbursement. The state has also recognized me as a Child Mental Health Specialist and an African American Mental Health Therapist due to my experience and education.
