Introduction: I have been instructing guitar students for quite some time. I take the approach of quality over quantity. Rather than filling my schedule with dozens of students, I prefer to have a few and help them deepen and broaden their understanding of music and how the guitar fits in. Whether they want to play solo, in a small ensemble, or in a full band I can help them acquire and develop the skills they need to succeed to help them reach their goals. I love helping students understand how the guitar works, showing them how chords and scales are constructed, and how they fit together to make music. I get a lot of satisfaction from watching someone take an idea I have introduced them to and running with it, using it in creative ways to make the music they want to make.

Michael English is one of Kansas City’s best musicians and finest music instructors. Period. His approach with students is both patient and kind. He is extremely knowledgeable on just about every facet of the music and instrument. He has an extensive professional resume of both formal education and musical associations. His time spent playing on the road and in the studios provides the necessary know-how for me to properly prepare and understand the music, the instrument and be ready for any settings I may be asked to perform. In addition to being a virtuous listener he is extremely articulate and has the innate ability to breakdown and explain complex musical ideas and systems. He also possesses a practical and useful understanding of the music business and musical equipment – a necessity for any musician today. Each lesson I come away with a new appreciation of the instrument I so desperately want to learn and the instrument, Michael, so passionately commands when he plays.

Mike is teaching me to play the guitar via once-a-week lessons in my home. He's doing a great job and showing great patience as my work and travel schedule often make my practice time limited. His flexibility and professionalism, combined with his effective teaching style make him someone who can actually succeed in teaching an old dog new tricks. If you're a busy adult who would like to learn the guitar from scratch...Mike is your man.

I have taken lessons from Michael for the past four months. He is an excellent guitar teacher, and over the years I have had many teachers. He is the best of them. He is well-versed in music theory and communicates complexity in an understandable way. More important, he knows many styles of music and can teach them. Also he's a great guitar player & is always a pleasure to listen to. I recommend him highly. David B.

Excellent teacher, very encouraging, breaks down needed musical concepts and has the ability to see and address solutions for issues related to technical and improvasitional guitar techniques.

FAQs

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

First, I ask students to play something, anything on their guitar. I will also ask some general questions to assess their knowledge and ability level. Then I will ask what they want to accomplish on the guitar. This process helps to determine what their needs and wants are and how to best fulfill them. I will usually demonstrate some playing styles such as chord/melody or fingerpicking.
