Introduction: Healthy Home Services Team Ray Mikelonis, Toxic Mold Consulting LLC BS-MSU Microbiology & Public Health Don Gaddes, Michigan Valley Homes, Inc. Over 40 Years of experience Certified Mold Investigators Certified Mold Remediation Contractors Indoor Air Quality Specialist Registered Building Scientist Licensed Builder of Custom Luxury Homes & Homes for the Chemically Sensitive Chaired the Board of Appeals for the Jackson County Health Department My company receives calls from distraught new home owners, who after living in their new home for a while wished they would have had a healthy home inspection, before they signed on the dotted line. A healthy home inspection can provide information to either negotiate a better price on the dream home, to repair the causes of hidden moisture conditions (most are repairable, some even do it yourself), or to walk away from the headache of potentially expensive repairs. I enjoy offering a practical approach for homeowners on the best way to correct their potential health damaging environment either by doing it themselves or how to select a good contractor for the more challenging situations.

Ray was prompt in completing some preliminary mold testing in my basement apartment and also did some testing for moisture in the walls. Though I did not opt for sending the samples out to the lab, Ray's initial findings and feedback were sufficient in helping me decide what additional steps I might take to keep the unit drier and more resistant to mold.

FAQs

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I do a phone interview to access the condition, nature and location of the possible mold contamination or suspected area of odor or water damage. Once the client agrees for an inspection then I visit the property and do a visual and hidden moisture inspection, take pictures and samples if requested then prepare a report outlining what needs to be done to correct the problem and either offer do-it-yourself guidelines or recommend how they can hire a contractor to do major work.

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

Mostly homeowners, sometimes renters or apartment dwellers. Real Estate Reps that want to make sure the property meets their clients expectations if mold is suspected.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

I recommend an inspection as the best value for $250 - $350 depending on travel or other considerations. Testing is extra and recommended before and after to determine the quality of the cleanup and remediation by the contractor for larger jobs or extensive flood or water damage. Not really necessary for smaller jobs because if you have mold I say spend the money on cleaning and remediation.
