- How did you get started doing this type of work?
Back in 2016, I was browsing Craigslist for jobs and came across an ad for face painters wanted at the downtown Aquarium. I had always been an artist in my free time, but had never done or even thought about doing face painting, much less considered the possibility of putting my talent toward an actual paying job. I was very intrigued, so I decided I would just call them and see where it went. They asked me to come interview the very next day, and to bring a portfolio of my drawings to show them. Having no experience as a professional artist I really did not expect to actually get hired, but, before even finishing the interview, that’s what happened! It was pretty much a random leap of faith I took for myself, desperate to find just about any job that might be a teeny tiny bit less meaningless and mundane than the kind of jobs I had been enduring. Thankfully, something drew me into that craigslist ad and told me to explore it, and that was no coincidence! I LOVED face painting from the very start. Well...at least once I got the hang of it enough to paint something halfway decent! It took me a ton of continuous practice, constructive criticism and lots of frustration to become accustomed and comfortable with this new medium, and start to get the brush stroke techniques down. I was very lucky to be working with a handful of very experienced and insanely talented women who had been face painting for many years. My fellow face painting ladies at the Aquarium continuously helped me to improve my skill level throughout my 1.5 years working there with them. I am so grateful that I had the amazing opportunity to work with and learn so much from so many amazing artists. It was an incredible beginning and introduction to what would, after only about 4 months of practicing and learning the trade at the Aquarium, slowly begin to bring me direct clients of my own. Over the course of my time spent face painting at the Aquarium and taking the occasional private event when I had the opportunity, the amount of interest in my personal face painting services began to increase, so eventually I decided it was time for me to venture off onto my next journey, and proceeded to officially open a business of my own as a freelance independent artist. And that is how my very first business, Lettuce Paint Them, was born! Thanks for reading about my very long and detailed artistic journey! 😊 (Additional chapters occurring now and in the future to come. Will be written and recorded once experienced. Thanks for your patience.)
