Introduction: I am a saxophonist, improviser, and composer. With 20 years of playing experience and 9 years of teaching experience, I help students address tone, technique, and expression through the lens of years of personal experimentation and problem solving. I have a bachelor's degree from the University of Maryland in music education and a master's degree from the New England Conservatory in jazz performance, I offer the double threat of pedagogic know-how and impressive conservatory chops. Much of my teaching experience has been spent nurturing students who are just beginning their musical journeys. I especially love starting students of any age from scratch and helping them to grow in whichever direction seems natural to them. I also enjoy working with more experienced students who like how I approach saxophone playing and would like to learn about my personal approach.

Sarah has been teaching my granddaughter the clarinet and from our first emails and phone conversations has been professional and prompt in her responses. Sarah arrives at my home and immediately makes my 9 year granddaughter feel comfortable. Sarah is upbeat , patient , and her way of teaching encourages her student to learn. Her love of music definitely shows ! DM

Sarah Hughes was my son's clarinet teacher for a number of years. She was a wonderful teacher for him- knowledgeable, gentle in her instruction while setting high expectations, attentive to details, supportive, etc. We couldn't have asked for a better teacher, and he progressed a lot. She worked with him a bit on improv as well, an added bonus. She is a highly-trained, wonderful musician with a lot to offer to the musical community.

Sarah has been giving our 5th grader flute lessons for the past 5 months. She is professional and prompt, and explains technique in a way that is very accessible to an elementary student. She also teaches by example, playing along on her own flute at certain points in the lesson. We've been very pleased with our child's musical growth, but also very happy that she is enjoying playing/practicing the flute.
