Introduction: In my readings and speeches, I go beyond the coming out and transition process and give people a sense of the actual lived experience of being transgender: the day-to-day obstacles and triumphs. I show how other identities intersect: no person is just one thing. My work is informed by my experiences as a young transgender man contending with discrimination, poverty, mental illness, trauma and sexual identity. Connecting with my audience and making things that seem complicated more accessible. Showing others the power in claiming and telling their own story.

Elliott visited my Voices of Diversity course at Onondaga Community College when I taught his first book REFUSE. I cannot speak highly enough about the experience. My students found his novel an exciting and provocative experience that fit perfectly with the themes and goals of the course. He was wonderful in the classroom. He discussed his choices as a writer and why he made some of the decisions he did. Then he answered questions. It went so well, I brought him to campus later for a campus-wide event. This event also went very well.
