FAQs

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

When you meet with Kelisen for your initial consultation, you should expect the first portion of your meeting to be fact gathering. She will sit down and discuss the unique details of your case, your spouse and your family. Kelisen will review your history with you, discuss any assets or debts you have acquired during your marriage, and give you an assessment of how the law relates to your case. She will discuss your exposures and come up with a strategy for how you can best protect yourself legally. Your initial consultation is scheduled for one hour, but may take longer depending on the facts of your case. You should bring with you any papers you have been served with or information you believe Kelisen should have in assessing your overall case. It is best to come to this appointment by yourself, but if you feel you need to bring someone with you it is allowed. However, it is important to note that a third-party presence can nullify your attorney-client privacy privileges. Kelisen can discuss this with you in more detail before your consultation begins. We discourage our clients from bringing their children to the initial consultation. Consultations typically involve conversations about sensitive topics children should not be present for. If you are not able to find someone to look after your children, they may wait in the lobby. Please bring activities for them. Lastly, your initial consultation is where Kelisen will be able to give you a realistic expectation of the expected cost for your case. Multiple factors including length of marriage, number of children and amount of assets determine the cost of a case. After discussing the details of your case, Kelisen will be able to give you a more informed idea of what the total cost will be.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

Kelisen has experience both in front of and behind the bench. Prior to founding The Binder Firm, she served as the judicial law clerk for the Honorable Janette R. Rodecap of the 16th Judicial Circuit. Having the privilege and responsibility of clerking for a judge provided Kelisen with a multidimensional understanding of how the judicial system works. Since then, Kelisen has dedicated her practice to Family and Criminal Law. She has represented clients in dissolutions of marriage, modification of custody and child support actions, establishment of child support actions, adoption matters, paternity actions, and misdemeanor and felony charges. She is frequently appointed by Judges as a Guardian ad Litem, an attorney who will advocate for the best interest of a child in court proceedings. Kelisen is an active member of the Kansas City legal community. She is the committee vice-chair for the Young Lawyers Public Relations committee and sits on the Board of Directors for the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Foundation. Kelisen recently graduated from the Kansas City Bar Leadership Academy and she is a published author in the KC Counselor.
