Introduction: Professional Recording Artist Drummer/ Percussionist Will Shaughessy is from a long line of Drummers. His Uncle Ed played drums for the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
Brooklyn born Will began his career in drumming at the age of 12 . He organized a band and played at local events, Festivals & restaurants. By the age of 18 he already started his drum quest and traveled to remote villages in West Africa to study the Vodun Drumming and ritual music. His next voyage found the young drummer in the West Indies, where he was learning the art of Steeldrum music ( Pan). He studied Jazz formerly at a SUNY PLattsburgh. His Jazz instructor Herm Matlock gave the Jazz rhythm section a true gift by inviting the legend Jazz drummer Louie Bellson for a series of concerts at other SUNY schools and performing Arts centers in NY. " I had the rare opportunity to trade 4' with Louie. we played his charts . Two drum sets set up for each concert.. it was an amazing experience, one that I will never forget"
Will Shaughnessy then headed back to NYC where he began recording music based on his travel experiences. He recorded for Lyrichord Records, NYC and Ellipses Arts, two labels out of NYC. Over the past years since leaving NY , he traveled and studied music from Bali, Thailand ,China, Japan and much of SE Asia. En route to North Australia was next. He hitched hiked his way around the Top End of OZ , There an Aboriginal family picked him up in their beat up old station wagon. They felt immediately akin to the young drummer boy from NY and wondered how a bloke from the States wound up here..
That family was the infamous Didjeridu maker himself Djalu. Will visited the family and learned the ways of the Aboriginees . He learned about the kinship of the animal world and how to really play the Didjeridu.Of course the family was very musically inclined and half the members of them were in the famous rock group, Yothu Yindi.
Will Shaughnessy now resides in North Georgia along with his Filipina wife and son. They travel and tour together as family . Will is now offering private lessons in home or by skype.
Music is a universal language .I have had the rare opportunity to travel the globe and experience the language of the Drum from many cultural viewpoints..
Music is about passion. If you have that passion you will not need to be told to practice ,you will live breath and eat music / your art form. I can help precipitate that process by showing the many cultural disciplines I have learned along the way. There are many tricks to each instrument and it is fundamentally imperative everyone have a mentor to look up to. even the top pros have their icons .
