FLORIDA ACADEMY OF CANINE EDUCATION
About this pro
Hello, welcome to the Florida Academy Of Canine Education profile page. Our Philosophy is simple...Be the Pack Leader and they will FOLLOW. At Florida Academy Of Canine Education, we believe dogs deserve to live healthy and happy lives with a loving and responsible family. Our mission is to build strong partnerships between your pet and your human pack. Dogs need and appreciate a strong leader. We know we can help you and your pack. But don't take OUR WORD for it, read our “5 stars” CUSTOMER REVIEWS. I go to you. I will train your dog in the comfort of your home. On your schedule, I only use tried and tested proven methods that really work. I’m Joe Melendez, Certified Professional Master Dog Trainer and Behavior Consultant. I am the owner and trainer at Florida Academy Of Canine Education. I’m compassionate, experienced, and highly skilled when it comes to training a puppy or an adult dog with behavioral problems. You call me, I show up, I train your dog. Those are my reviews. I’m also a member of the Association Of Professional Dog Trainers. I graduated from one of the top Dog Trainer Schools in New York in 2000. All my life, dogs have provided me with a sense of peace and tranquility. Their simplicity and the unconditional love they give have always been a source of great joy, and the basis for my passion and desire to make working with dogs my life’s work. I have been successfully training dogs for over 18 years. During that time, my success as a trainer was not only the result of classroom instruction, but also from self-study, and most importantly an inherent and heartfelt connection with dogs of all breeds. I enjoy working with and educating people. Dogs will not change their behavior unless their owners change theirs first. I use a lot of human analogies, so people can understand what’s going on with their dog, why he doesn’t comply or why he acts the way he does. They gain much more respect and understanding for their dogs and see them in a different light. Most dog owners are extremely dedicated and want what’s best for their dog. I try to offer simple but efficient solutions they can implement easily. Throughout my 18 yrs experience training dogs of all ages, sizes, and breeds I’ve learned to quickly identify and solve common behavioral problems. Unfortunately, many inexperienced trainers give solutions to the symptoms. You guessed it! After a few weeks the problems still exists and you and your dog continue to suffer. 35% of my customers had their dogs trained by someone that used a different training method, prop or tool that I wouldn’t use or recommend. By getting to the root of the problem many of the behavior concerns will be corrected and others simply disappear. I specialize in behavior modification, counter-conditioning, desensitizing, rehabilitation , problem solving and obedience training to include: -Housebreaking/Potty Training -Inappropriate Urination and Defecation -Pulling on the leash -Not coming when called -Darting out through open doors -Hyperactivity -Destructiveness -Nipping & mouthing -Excessive barking -Jumping on people -Counter surfing -Fears, phobias and anxieties -Generalized anxiety disorder -Separation distress syndrome (separation anxiety) -Compulsive disorders -Shyness -Lack of confidence -Anxiety-based behaviors -Aggression-Dog to dog/Dog to human -Growling, snarling or biting Your home is the center of your pet's life and individual In-Home training is the most logical place to train your dog. Since I work with your pets in their own environment, they will learn faster and problems get handled on the spot. A brief list of my training programs include but are not limited to the following: 1. Basic Obedience and Behavior Modification Program: (5 months or older) This program is for those who want their dog to be a Rock Star. This program includes basic obedience commands, behavior modification, and prevention training. Dogs normally develop common behavior problems during the first three years of their life. This program will correct and prevent unwanted behaviors from developing and or escalating. Since training is done in your home it enables me to get to the root of most of your dog's behavioral problems. The most experienced dog owners are familiar with common behavior problems but many wonder why their dog exhibits these behaviors. Many other common dog behaviors are often misunderstood and mishandled by dog owners. I have found that most problems are legitimate survival skills on the dog's part, acted out in an inappropriate environment. An appropriate training program to correct these problems is available and alternatives are suggested so instincts can be acted out in a non-destructive behavior. 2. Dog Aggression/Rehabilitation. Does your dog have issues with dog aggression, dog/leash reactivity, or simply goes over the top when it comes to other animals being around him? While we're quick to label many of the dog's behaviors as aggressive, most dogs are simply reactive, in other words, they overreact to certain stimuli in the environment. This program will give you a solid foundation of control over your dog. You and your dog will work around other dogs and animals in different scenarios, commands, and situations. This program will also teach you how to be in control of those anxiety-based behaviors by using behavior modification/desensitization and counter-conditioning techniques while exposing your dog in small doses to the stimuli that cause the stress. Most people think of reactivity or aggression as the only diagnosis needed when assessing a dog that is presenting with agonistic behaviors such as barking, snarling, growling, lunging, aggression towards humans, aggression towards other dogs or animals, aggressive behavior on leash, snapping, or biting to protect food, toys, treats, and bones. The reality is more complicated. There are eight major types of dog aggression and each has a unique root cause. To effectively treat aggression in dogs, it’s important to understand the details of each case because each kind of aggression requires a different treatment plan. In many cases, dogs simultaneously present with more than one type – known as a comorbid diagnosis. An appropriate treatment plan specific to the type of aggression must be used. 3. Proud Puppy Program (8-16 wks old): NO MORE PEE OR POO in the house. My potty training system gets you fast results. When it comes to working with pups under 5 months old we offer a puppy kindergarten program using a (rewards-based) positive reinforcement method that works. We will go over important topics for those early months of your puppy’s life. This program teaches you proper puppy socialization, proper care and raising of puppy, crate training, leash training, prevention of unwanted behaviors before they begin, health issues, diet, and nutrition. Many new owners are very anxious to get started with obedience training, but we do not recommend starting this kind of intense training (nor should any trainer) until they are at least 5 months. Our Puppy Training method (without the clicker) uses your puppy’s engagement, your verbal/physical praise, and high value treats to reward your puppy for doing something you want him to do. Because the reward makes him more likely to repeat the behavior, (rewards-based) positive reinforcement training is the MOST powerful tool for shaping or changing your puppy’s behavior. 4. Dog and Baby Program: Are you and your family expecting a bundle of joy? Having a baby is a life-changing experience for everyone involved—and that includes the family dog. Don’t wait until you come home from the hospital to discover the potential problems. Preparing ahead of time reduces stress and increases success! A Baby/Dog association lesson is a great baby shower gift for your closest family members and friends. Some useful verbal commands that are taught include: 1. Heel 2. Sit 3. Stay 4. Down 5. Come 6. Place 7. Ok (Release for playtime) 8. Respect for the word “NO”. Through these effective and fun training programs: -The puppies and dogs are taught how to learn and they become better canine companions with more focus, self-control, life-skills and manners. -The pet owners are given the skills and confidence to train their dog. -Stronger bonds are developed between pet owners and their dogs as they learn how to communicate and build stronger, more trusting relationships with each other. -Puppies and dogs get a great start – whether their role is beloved family pet or they go onto other future roles in the variety of dog sports and activities available today. 5. Board and Train Program: (5 months or older). Ever wish you could send your dog to an EXPERT and when the dog comes back home, he or she is well-trained, great on the leash, and listens to you without the use of shock or prong collars? I do exist, and I am here to help you and your dog. Can you put a price on peace of mind? People who choose to Board and Train with me sometimes just don’t have the time to train their dog. They have a very busy work schedule or just prefer to let an expert do all the work. A trained dog is a happy dog. Having a well trained dog is Priceless! This program is also ideal for skittish or shy dogs. Call today to find out how I can help you educate your dog or puppy. It’s only a phone call away and may be just what your pooch is looking for. WHY NO PRICES? My training programs are not a one size fits all. They vary considerably from dog to dog. Each of my programs is customized to your unique dog. I take into consideration your dog's age, temperament, behavioral problems, and your training objectives. I offer a free in-home consultation. After my assessment of the behavioral issues and prognosis I will customize a training program that best fits your dog’s needs, your work schedule and your budget. Wouldn’t you want to meet the trainer that will partner up with you and teach you how to train your dog (in your home) before you hire him ? The career path that I chose has given me the opportunity to work with my favorite animal while helping other dog lovers better understand their pets. There’s no better joy than leaving a training session knowing that you are changing the life of both an animal and a human. To see a well trained dog and a happy owner live in peace and harmony with each other is priceless.
