FAQs
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I like to get a feel for what they're interested in learning. What is it that first drew them to choose this instrument and how I as a teacher can guide them to reach their goals. It helps to know their musical background, can they already read notes? How strong are their aural skills? Do they sing? These are all things we can develop together that will make them a stronger musician.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been playing violin for 15 years, I also sing, play piano, and basic guitar. As an active performer and composer, I am constantly seeking new forms of expression and melodies from different countries. I have a B.A. in Music from Loyola Marymount University, studied the Kodaly Method at New York University and briefly at the Kodaly Institute in Hungary, done several workshops in Eastern Europe, and as an avid traveler and have picked up many melodies abroad that I like to incorporate in my teaching. Most of my learning/training has come purely from experience.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
I started teaching while in college, all music students had to study pedagogy, it came very natural to me, so I pursued it in addition to my performance work. I love to teach, for me it is sharing what I know and giving it in a way that is enjoyable and fun. I have had my share of horrible teachers growing up, so I am confident to say I know what not to do especially with my beginner students.
