Introduction: Lydia Byard Mercer began teaching violin, viola, and fiddle lessons over ten years at the age of 15. She teaches out of her home studio in North East, PA. Lydia became the youngest U.S. national Scottish fiddle champion at 16 years old. Lydia was also a member of the winning quartet in the Macauley chamber music competition. I have been a student of Lydia's for about 3 months. My experience with her has been nothing but amazing. She is the perfect mix between corrective and encouraging. While she will point out areas to improve, she does not make you feel bad about your playing (which is something difficult to find). Every single lesson I feel like I learn something new, and the second I get in the car I am excited to get home and practice violin. She is also a very talented violinist who is passionate about what she does. I think Lydia is perfect for all ages of people who want to learn the violin. HIGHLY recommend.

Details: 14 - 17 years old • 2 - 4 yrs of formal training • Yes, the student can read music • Classical violin • Classical • Yes, the student has a violin • 45 minutes • At the pro’s location

I am a professional guitar player that decided to take up the fiddle about four years ago. I felt that I wasn’t progressing on my own, so I started looking for a teacher on Thumbtack and found Lydia. She has helped me grow and always picks the correct tunes that work on certain fiddle techniques. I would highly recommend her as a violin/fiddle teacher.

Details: 45 - 64 years old • 2 - 4 yrs of formal training • Yes, the student can read music • Fiddling • What the teacher recommends • Yes, the student has a violin • 30 minutes • I travel to the violin teacher

I took violin lessons from Lydia Byard for three years. I really enjoyed my time with her. She is an excellent teacher. She is extremely proficient in violin, and what makes her a great teacher is her ability to work with her students and recognize their individual needs. Lydia is able to modify her teaching to fit each student. She is very encouraging and good at teaching techniques in a way that is engaging and fun. I learned a lot from Lydia, and she greatly encouraged me in my love of music.
