All Ways Learning

Introduction: I am a student-centered teacher and tutor. What this means is that I find a way to connect the lesson to the student's interests, abilities and learning goals rather than use material given to the student for him or her to learn. If a student likes sports, then the lesson will likely involve a sports topic, physical game or activity, and some sort of challenge that will encourage him or her to want to continue playing and improving WHILE learning the language, writing or reading task at hand. Once my student can show what she or he knows using his or her preferred method, then we can approach the textbook problem or other task that previously seemed daunting. Success breeds success, so my teaching strategy is to give students the tools they need to succeed every step of the way so they can build the confidence they need to approach any learning tasks on their own. My greatest satisfaction as a teacher is helping my students build confidence in themselves as learners and seeing them enjoy the challenges before them instead of fear them. I believe learning should be a FUN challenge, not an overwhelming one. I most treasured moments as a teacher is when my students tell me how their views have changed from feeling bored, stupid or frustrated in other classes to looking forward to our lessons because they get to practice using skills they need or want to know in a safe, fun and engaging environment. Best of all, I like getting to know my students and having them get to know me and other students. In other words, in building community where everyone feels welcome, safe and valued, an environment that I intentionally create and require whenever working with more than one student.
