Introduction: Shafer Landau Interiors provides low-key, open-minded design services. I tailor design solutions to meet both the needs and the budgets of my clients. I strive to create beautiful environments utilizing what my clients love and introducing them to new ideas for how they can best enjoy their homes. I enjoy the fact that every client, and every home are different! I have helped people with tiny apartments in New York City, new construction in North Carolina, and historic homes in the Midwest. It's so much fun to see all the different ways we live and work--and so satisfying to help people fall in love with their homes and see how a great space can improve their lives.

I've used Sue for micro and macro interior design projects for my historic home that has a lot of modern demands. She's helped me make the most of my small budget to overhaul once-unusable spaces -- and then also been terrific in helping me make the right choices in larger investments for American-made furniture. I loved working with Sue. She was a great sounding board for some complicated design issues I had with my house. The thing that I found so refreshing about her was the way she listened to me. She didn’t just impose her ideas about what I should have, or what the current trend was. She helped me figure out a layout that works, colors I love and also helped me get furniture that worked with my budget and my taste.

Sue was great to work with! My now-wife and I worked with her when we had just moved in together and needed to furnish and decorate a nearly-empty house. Sue was great at listening, showing us lots of options, and helping us figure out what exactly we liked. She was also super-responsive when we had minor problems with one of the furniture pieces, and got it addressed quickly at no cost. Great experience, and we love the way our house looks!

We contacted Shafer Landau designs to create a master bath and dressing area in our newly purchased home. Susan listened carefully to our hopes for the space and design aesthetic and came up with some exciting ideas that we had never considered. The design made great use of all of the space and integrated a variety of pre-existing and new materials. We are happy to show off the space to visitors. It appears as though Susan is well regarded in the area as each contractor and vendor was of excellent quality and easy to work with. Her delightful manner, professionalism, and depth of knowledge made this a fun and rewarding experience. Next time we are in the market we will be certain to contact Susan.

FAQs

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
I charge $85 an hour. The initial two-hour consultation is $150. I charge cost+30% for furnishing items that are available "to the trade" via my designer accounts.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
During an initial consultation, I interview you to get to know what your goals and budget are. I gather information about the space itself (measurements, lighting, structural issues, architecture, etc.). I then put together a plan and a proposal.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I received a bachelor's degree in cultural anthropology. After work experience in event planning, catering, and non-profit agency management, I went back to school and received another degree in Interior Design. A career in interior design was a longtime dream, and I feel so fortunate that I can pursue it.
