Hired on Thumbtack

Hired on Thumbtack

We had a stamped concrete patio put in and from the beginning had issues. Less than 8 months later the patio is chipping and discoloring in huge areas. We contacted them about fixing it and we're told that they would come once the weather was nicer. The patio was still covered in their contract. Now 4 months later they won't return our calls or emails.

This by far was one of the worst concrete jobs I have ever seen. It will cost me 2000 dollars to fix it. To be fair, the first concrete truck was late and the concrete was hot in the truck but this is always a possibility. It overwhelmed them. You have to be prepared for this kind of thing. To be truthful the second pour looks mediocre even with a normal concrete load. They showed up late with 1 less person than they promised and it hurt them and me. I assumed they had experience enough to handle the job but I was mistaken. I had 9000 dollars in the foundation and countless hours digging mud for this pour to be taken so lightly. It showed a lack of professionalism. After it was done, I paid them for the quoted job thinking they may discount it because the did not privide the finish as quoted but they took the money and left. The owner never returned my calls even though they still had to cut expansion joints. I told his wife, who did call, to tell him not to even bother, I will do it myself. I did not want to take the chance that he would do more damage. I do not give negative reviews lightly knowing that your reputation is everything but this was a disaster. I have poured and finished a ton of concrete and have been in the construction business so this review does not come without knowledge. This may have been one bad job but it was my job and it cost me.

Set in Stone Masonry's reply
As the owner of this company “his wife” I want to respond to this review with some discrepancies, and only hope that it does not look like excuses. I am very sorry that you are not happy with this concrete pour, from the pictures I honestly think that it looks good for what the three employees had to deal with. After speaking with you for weeks about this job we became very hesitant to continue on with it, since set in stone was not responsible for the job from the start to the finish. As anyone knows, as well as you since you have construction background, that the start of the job can be crucial to what the finished product looks like, with that being said the forming that you had done was not done correctly by our standards. We arrived on the job 20 minutes late, after letting you know that traffic was backed up on 70, we did not arrive as late as the concrete truck driver, so therefore this was not a reason your job turned out the way that it did. The concrete truck driver, that you hired, showed up extremely late with a hot load of concrete (concrete that is setting up faster then expected). Our crew worked tirelessly and endlessly to produce the best look concrete they could with the conditions they were dealt. When the day was done and we spoke over the phone about the entirety of your job you informed me that the concrete company was responsible for all of the errors that occurred that day, and that they refunded you most of your money. Set in Stone Masonry had upheld every aspect of the contract that was signed by both you and I, and when we spoke over the phone there was no indication that you were unsatisfied by OUR work, only the concrete companies unprofessionalism and inexperience. I had offered to send my guys out to cut the concrete at our expense since we had all the tools to do so, since the timing wasn’t going to work out for you we had to delay it. I am the voice of this company, and I do all of the scheduling, my husband does the work, therefore he wasn’t able to call you back. One of our top priorities in the company is to always respond to any customers questions, complaints, or thoughts. In my opinion I think that I have done that very well with you, we spoke over the phone countless times, I answered all questions via text and email within minutes. You are correct that a terrible review can cost a company a lot, and we are truly sorry that you are unhappy about a job, if this was our companies fault then I would have refunded money, or done anything to make it right, but after looking over the pictures I can clearly see that we did do everything that we promised, to the best of our ability given the circumstances.

FAQs

  • How did you get started doing this type of work?

I grew up in the construction and masonry business. With over 12 years of experience, I have used my knowledge to work for many other respectable companies. In 2017 I decided to start my own business, one that focuses on making residential customers ideas come to life with unique and original projects.

  • What types of customers have you worked with?

We have been fortunate to work with array of customers, from residential to commercial. Doing projects for homeowners as small as a simple driveway, patios and outdoor kitchens for families to enjoy, to building the foundation for a house or garage.

  • What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?

Advice that I would give would be to always ask for references! There are a lot of people out there that are working without the experience or knowledge that can cost you more money to fix in the long run. Also, always make sure that the details of the project are in writing (preferably a contract, stating the contractors responsibilities).
