Areas needing work
M&K provided a variety of services, including (1) re-engineering / repainting a kitchen island, (2) designing, building, and installing book shelving in our sun room, (3) flooring a covered balcony space off of our master bedroom, (4) designing, constructing, and installing of floor-to-ceiling shoe cubbies in a walk-in master bedroom closet, and (5) installing a beaded board ceiling over our entrance way. Each project was completed with competence and care. We couldn't be happier with all of the projects they completed for us. They are a delightful couple who enjoy working together and with their clients.Dec 6, 2018Verified
I created a project specifying 3 fence posts that needed replacement and other various side jobs. This company bid on the project with what seemed to be a much too low ("too good to be true") quote, so I asked that they come out and look at it first to give a more accurate quote. They refused and assured me that it would not take more than $150 to complete the project. Still surprised, I sent further information and pictures, and they stood by their quote. They were 30 minutes late arriving for our scheduled appointment, but when they did show up they told me that the original fence was put up with "landscape timbers" (their words, not mine) and suggested I do all 22 posts rather than just the 3 I originally asked for. Then they told me days later that they were withdrawing their consideration from our project. Which would've been fine if it ended there...but they rambled on. I had sent them pictures of the portion of the fence that needed the attention, and they stated that I misrepresented the project and that they thought they were just coming out for the fence, when my project specified 2 other small tasks. It seems as if they had not even taken the time to read my project before they bid on it. They also said that I didn't tell them the fence was set on landscape timbers (like I should've known), and that was a misrepresentation of the amount of time it would take them to complete the project (again, like I should have known, and another reason they should have asked questions to give a more accurate quote). They also accused me of misrepresenting the project stating that I should have disclosed there was poison ivy on the fence. There is poison ivy in the back of our yard, on potions of the fence that were not in our quote. I sent photos of the portions of the fence needing repaired, so they would have seen it there as well. Not a misrepresentation on my part. Also, that's not a reason a professional company would decline a project. Further, when they were here they suggested to me that I may be able to help them with the 2 person auger to get the job done quicker and save on labor costs, then turned around in their withdrawal letter stating that I had told them I wanted to help with the labor as much as possible, and that this would put them in a bad spot as they don't hire outside employees...what?? They were the ones to suggest I assist them. Basically it was just a big long excuse written out to me and my wife to say they didn't want to do the work (both the work they suggested to us and the original work we had asked for). Oh and the caveat to all of this, they had the audacity to try and charge us money for their "visit". Leading us to believe within all of these excuses as to why they can't do it, the real truth/scam comes out. One of the most unprofessional experiences I have ever had to deal with. Hence my first ever review. People, there are a ton of great choices and professional companies I have found on thumbtack. Don't waste your time with this one. Unfortunately the request submitted by this customer was not worded or presented correctly. We went to the customer's home to perform the replacement of 3 fence posts, we had purchased the posts and thought we were there to install them. The customer's request stated "less than 2 hours of work". When we arrived we were asked to come into the home and asked to fix 2 8ft. window seals and 2 stair treads and several corner area's of base cap, all had been chewed by their dog. Then we were taken outside to the fence area where the 3 posts were to be replaced and in fact all 22 post on the fence were not 4X4 posts, but landscape timbers that had only been placed about 6 inches into the ground. A large amount of the fence was covered in poison ivy. We informed the home owner we could not repair the 3 posts, that it really needed 22 post with a large amount of fence repair. The customer asked to get him a quote as soon as possible and he wanted to take part in the repair process to keep cost down. We did not do any work at that time, cutting our total income plan and using our booked slots for paying jobs to do a quote we were not expecting. We discussed a repair plan and after careful consideration we felt it was a not in our best interest to take on the repair of a 160ft fence that was improperly installed. We contacted the customer via Thumbtack and explained we were going to decline the job and why. Meanwhile, we paid for the quote, took 2 hours for travel/quote time at house and did not make a dime. We are very reasonable individuals but felt a bit mislead and taken advantage of, therefore we exited. The customer became upset, leaving this review. We try to work with all our quotes/customers.....but can not please all.....
