Introduction: Writing is, in short: thinking critically. It's being ready and willing to embrace, negate, synthesize, and appreciate any and all perspectives that may come your way. It's the single greatest gateway to intellectual engagement and empowerment. It is agency made legible. I have degrees in literature and writing from Columbia University and James Madison University, and my first book of poems, Letters & Buildings, was published by Subito Press in 2014. Quite literally, everything. If, however, I had isolate a particular aspect of the process that intrigues me, it would be the the kinetic energy embedded in the moment just before a student "gets it." The promise of realization and empowerment is incredibly fulfilling.

My daughter has always struggled with writing (she finds it tedious, and, as a result, difficult). When I hired Tom as her writing tutor, my hope was that he would help her make it through a particularly writing-heavy academic year. Tom not only allowed my daughter to meet this goal, but took my daughter so far beyond it that I still have a hard time believing it. Originally, I chose him because he looks good on paper: he is a published author, has an MFA from Columbia University, and years of teaching experience. It only took a handful of sessions to see the other qualities that make him so unique. He is not only committed to seeing his students do well (in the traditional sense), but, more importantly, he is committed to cultivating students' investment in, and appreciation for, the written word. My daughter has been empowered, and she has begun to see writing as a craft, as something pleasurable, and as something that will be imperative in all future life arenas. She has, in other words, come to see writing as her favorite subject. And, she sees Tom as one of the more significant influences on her intellectual life. The magic he works goes beyond writing, only. Because of my daughter's devotion to Tom as a teacher, we also hired him to help her with geometry. Although most tutors are able to do *either* math and science, *or* the more humanistic disciplines, it would appear that this is not the case with Tom. In fact, I can't think of a subject in which he would *not* be an effective tutor! It probably goes without saying at this point: our family recommends Tom very, very highly.

Tom is magnificent. My children loved him so much that I told my college students about him, and many of them have hired him, as well. I'll never understand it, but he seems capable of working with 20-year-olds, 10-year-olds, and every age in between.

I have worked with Mr. Hummel for three years now, and I cannot praise him enough. He is passionate about his work, knowledgeable, and understanding, and he goes out of his way to help, especially if you ask for it. Overall, he is one of the most supportive instructors I know.

Thomas has a lot of experience, both hands-on and in teaching. He is able to answer any question you may have and sometimes provide you with creative alternatives you may not have thought of. He is always patient and understanding. I have throroughly enjoyed every class I have taken with him and I will carry the skills I learned from him with me! I was awarded a Creative Writing scholarship for college that I would not have earned were it not for his instruction in writing. Overall, I have been very impressed.

What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
The current hourly rate--$45 per hour--is set to try and meets the needs of all involved. I do not wish to exclude anyone who may not be able to sustain that rate over extended periods, and am more than willing to discuss a rate reduction depending on the length of our work together. That said, the current rate is not arbitrary, either. I think it is a fair reasonable reflection of my skill as a teacher and my longevity within the field of teaching.
What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I'd like to say that I have a standard procedure with each new client. However, doing so would not only be misleading, but would directly undermine one of the most important aspects of the learning environment: I need to identify your learning style and develop a functional rapport with you before any technical work can begin. That said, it is always beneficial to hear from you in regards to strengths, weaknesses, areas of greatest need, previous experience, and, perhaps most importantly, long- and short-term goals.

Columbia University, MFA in Writing. James Madison University, BA in English. Nearly twenty years of teaching at the elementary, middle, high school, and university levels. Specializing in Rhetoric, essay writing, Expository Writing, Creative Writing, literary analysis, and research writing.
