I am currently working on a 1936 Bentley. This car has a one-off custom body (built by the Mayfair Carriage Company of Edgeware Road, London). The structure of these custom bodies is soft aluminum over an ash wood frame. The finish had lots of flaws and the underlying framing was bad in several places, so the first step was removal of the original finish. It turns out that because of irregularities in the hand-formed and welded body panels, the entire car was covered with a skim coat of putty that reached 1/8" thick in some places. With even the most aggressive aircraft paint remover I could clean off only a few square inches per hour.
I had met Don at a car show and after he explained what soda blasting was all about, it seemed that this was an efficient and safe solution for stripping the car. Because of all the putty it took nearly two full days, but the aluminum was cleaned completely (even on the undersides) and there was not a hint of warping due to excessive pressure. There was no damage to the underlying wood. It would have taken me months to get to that point using many gallons of stripper.
I am convinced that soda blasting is the most gentle but thorough method for efficient cleaning of delicate metal surfaces, and Don is a skilled practitioner of the craft.
