Major improvement after only one session
Extremely helpful right off the bat! Gives pointers of things to work on in between sessions which is helpful. After just the first session we are already noticing a major difference in leash tugging which had been an issue for over a year! Also communicative and accessible. Highly recommended.

    Ian the Terrific!
Ian was the first one to respond to my Thumbtack request for a trainer to help my husband and I with our 4 year old, 70 pound coonhound Nash. We set up a phone consultation and decided to meet in person. Ian was warm, professional, and forthright. Nash is a very loving spirited and fearful dog who is sometimes (unpredictably) scared by other dogs and becomes leash aggressive. Because of his size he can be scary for people when he's reacting. When we first walked on the street with Ian, we were pretty scared ourselves. But astonishingly Ian was the Nash whisperer. Nash trotted alongside, not a noise from his lips. We learned from Ian how to hold the leash so we don't communicate our expectation that trouble could arise when a dog appears, manage our various voice tones to communicate different commands to Nash, and to enjoy our walks. We met a second time to reinforce our progress. Since then, no melt downs on the street or in our building. We will continue to work with Ian to further OUR human development in managing Nash and most importantly keeping him safe. I have been so impressed by Ian, his intelligence, knowledge, skill, firm kindness. He knows what's he's doing. We are very grateful. As the Chief Psychologist at Mount Sinai Beth Israel, I fancy myself to be an expert in behavior. But I have a lot to learn. Thank you Ian and Nash says woof. See you soon.

I never write reviews, but this is my second one for Ian. We had a second session and the dog is already off leash! (He's three, so this a long time coming.) I can't say enough about the dog's changes even this early, and Ian's easy and supportive manner. He has made me a much better owner. I can't recommend him enough.

    Ian gets results. Don't hesitate.
If you are having trouble with your beloved dog please believe when I say that Ian will help you solve the problems. I'd never done anything like working with a trainer before so I had no idea what to ask or what to expect. The experience with Ian and the remarkable results with Teddy our terrier leaves me with a feeling of such satisfaction it renders me a little incredulous that I could have had any hesitation in the first place. Honestly, I don't know how he can make a living producing such results with only ONE visit!

    First session
Ian is wonderful. It's only been the first session and he's already shown me how to walk my puppy Hazel properly without her pulling me, how to teach her to heel, and basic obedience commands such as sit, sit and stay, come, and paw. He also understands pitbulls and works to eliminate the stigma associated with the often misunderstood breed, which is commendable.

    Great, informative experience
Ian taught me and my boyfriend the skills we needed to help correct our puppy's issues! It's still a work in progress, but we're much more educated to deal with the dog's issues since we had our session with Ian.

    Great trainer!
Ian is fantastic. We hired him to figure out how to help our rescue chihuahua be less aggressive towards men, and he gave us lots of helpful pointers. By the end of the session our dog learned to come, sit, and stay. He is very easy to work with, personable, and understands what makes dogs tick. Highly recommend!

Excellent trainer. Patient with the dog and so caring about his feelings . My dog became so comfortable that he loosened up to him, which he hasn't done to anyone else before. I highly recommend this trainer to anyone.

Training from Ian changed our dog Tyson and our walks in the park
Ian work training our dog was great and changed our dog who was unsure of other people and at times aggressive with some other dogs and at times made us careful when walking him. Now he is very friendly and happy to meet other people and dogs. We both now enjoy our walks in the park thanks to Ian.

    Two Paws Up!
Ian Phillips is absolutely amazing! He is a truly wonderful, loving-but-firm dog trainer. He has assisted me in training both my loveable-but-stubbornly-intractable Frenchie Hazel and my blind rescue Pitbull mutt Lulu-Belle. I recommend him highly. You also won't find a funnier, more charming guy to spend time with as you learn to train your pup.

What is your typical process for working with a new customer?
I usually conduct a phone interview with the owner to assess the issues. This gives me a clue on how to proceed when we first meet.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have been dog training since I was a teenager. When I decided to make dog training my career I went to Anthony Jerone's School of Dog Training & Career Inc.. There I got a firm foundation and my New York State Certification as a dog trainer.
Describe a recent project you are fond of. How long did it take?
I have been working with the Central Park Conservancy for their Dog Fairs and PAWS events for the last couple of years. Doing group dog training sessions is lots of fun because of the community aspect of the event and the energy of the group.
What advice would you give a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
Dog Training is more an art than science. Your dog is not a computer where I install new software and hit "run". Training is about being calm, consistent, patient and always kind. It's not a battle of wills but a meeting of the minds (dog and owner). Don't let a dog trainer tell you the "truth". There is no such thing. Dog are as much individuals as we are, embrace it and you will be a happy dog owner.
