I've had sooo many massage therapists and masseuses for the last 20 years and Steve is a rare breed IMO. I have chronic pain issues that are so bad now just walking to a massage spa is daunting. So I thought I'd try someone who could come to my house as I would be more relaxed. First of all, his folding bed was more comfortable than some spas! Secondly, and most importantly, he asked what ailed me and he applied soft pressure sometimes and stronger pressure other times (which is unusual because most massages are either/or). He explains why you have tension in certain areas of the body as a direct result of other areas in the body that you carry similar/mirroring tension (a compensating effect) which made a lot of sense to me. Physical therapists have touched on this phenomenon (no pun intended) but never delved into it as deeply & logically. Very helpful because it adds to your awareness of how you carry yourself (out of habit & circumstance) & your posture & how all these things considered affect your overall physical health (which can even affect your mental health/spirit!). So Steve's a keeper! I can't recommend him highly enough (& can't wait for my next session, I feel worlds better!)!Aug 27, 2017Verified

I was having neck and shoulder issues, suffering with headaches nearly every day until I began working with Steve. Steve's hands are pure magic, and his deep tissue massages are exactly what I needed to work out the knots that were aggravating my aching body. For the last five years, Steve has been a constant in my life. Always the consummate professional, Steve comes to my home with his equipment, prepared to do whatever manipulation is necessary to make me feel better. He is reliable, he is amazing, and I recommend him unconditionally!Jul 15, 2017
I have had a lot of massages over the last 50 years and Steve is excellent in every way. I can highly recommend him!!Jul 10, 2017
Steve Martin has the rare quality of sensing where you need work. I call him magic hands. He helped me get through a painful back injury in three sessions. He never works so deeply as to cause you to wince or tense up. Plus he is a sweet, intelligent man who knows when you want to talk and when you want silence. Steve comes to your home and does not charge extra for his travel time.Jul 6, 2017
- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)? For my training, skill level, depth and length of experience and considering what the market normally supports currently in Manhattan, my current base rate of 100 for an hour is quite a good value. Or if someone prefers 90 minutes I would normally charge 130. (Longer sessions can be arranged if needed.) Unless there is some major obstacle, I normally do not charge extra for travel to the client, especially within the range I indicated when setting up this Thumbtack account.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?Normally in the course of a preliminary phone conversation and some basic questions at our first meeting I will gain not only relevant medical history but also some pertinent personal information regarding job, attitudes, goals, life events, areas of concern in the body or the client's life. My hands are extremely sensitive and intuitive and will find more than the client describes but I need to know what is most important to the client in our conversations. Not only from initial conversations but also from the entirety of the first session, we will both know better how to proceed and choose helpful goals going forward.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?Though I have a Bachelors and two Masters Degrees unrelated to my current line of work, my relevant training for massage occurred at the Swedish Institute in NYC. I completed that in excellent form and passed the NY State Board exam that year with one of the highest scores. My initial and more advanced Reiki attunements occurred about 2 years later. I have kept up to date in my continuing education requirements. A sample of some of those continuing ed courses over the years include sports massage, prenatal massage, cranial sacral, lymphatic drainage, and Qigong to name a few. At one time I also had to develop my own system to deliver post operative liposuction massages for dozens of people needing that at that time. Two other areas which may not be directly related to massage but can sometimes be extremely useful background and foundation for me include having done Transcendental Meditation since 1983 and also having been certified in hypnosis. It also has not hurt that at one time I traveled and lived overseas for a period of years allowing me an appreciation of people from vastly different backgrounds.
