Hired on Thumbtack

After witnessing me finish my dealings getting an estimate for the roof replacement on my parent’s rental property with a previous contractor, Brandon White provided with an estimate for the roof’s replacement at $4500, which he confirmed after he got a ladder the next day to do a more thorough inspection the next day. (Isn’t it strange that he did not bring a ladder as did the previous estimator?) After doing the inspection again with a ladder the $4500 estimate remained the same and it was submitted in writing to me. (This was $2500 less the previous estimators quote.) He told me that he DOES NOT ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS and he required half down and half upon completion. Since we did not have $2250 in cash before and $2250 cash after we decided to administer repairs instead of a full roof replacement for the cost of $900. We contracted him for the $900 repair. During the repair, he called me and said that he discovered additional damage. He provided images of the additional damage and said that it would be an additional $600 for the additional repair which we paid and he did. A week later the tenants of the rental property called and reported that the roof was leaking in the same place again. Brandon went back to the property and provided and additional $550 estimate for that repair. He placed a tarp over the area of the leak. Initially I told Brandon to go ahead and schedule that repair. My mother had suspicions and concerns about this additional incrementing cost in time and money for repairs so I asked Brandon to call my mother and speak to her directly so we could determine the next best course of action; to continue with incremental repairs or replace the entire roof. After Mom talked to Brandon she told that he agreed to replace the roof for $2750 which was supposed to be the difference between the original cost of the roof replacement and the money we had already spent. (Actually that $2750 should have been $3000; $4500 - $1500. My arithmetic escaped me at that time, but you will soon see that this is inconsequential.) After speaking with Mom Brandon called me back and said his price was $4500 to replace the roof. He added that the he under-bided the original quote of $4500 for the complete roof replacement. When I told Mom this we decided to have a conference call with Brandon and get things sorted out. When the conference call started and continued Brandon continue to have two conversations at the same time, one with his colleagues, and other with Mom, Dad, and myself. This was extremely rude and unprofessional. In the course of this conversation Brandon admitted that he lied to my mother to our faces because he was exasperated in dealing with her and accused me of setting him up in asking him to talk to her. I saw no pretense in asking Brandon to speak with Mom directly since Mom was paying the money. Brandon’s behavior became increasing irrational, belligerent, and rude. So I told him that since he saw fit to lie to my mother about the costs we would have no further dealings with him. In summary Brandon White is a self-confessed liar and is not to be trusted. He runs his business poorly. He is not prepared to do estimates properly. He does not accept credit cards, which I find shady. Based on what he revealed, I am compelled to speculate if this process was a scam to bilk us of money. I strongly recommend that he be removed from your website. Sincerely, Rodney Ballard On behalf or Richard and Ruby Ballard Sr.
