We have a 120 year old Historic Blue Island, Illinois home with big "L" shaped porch that unfortunately was rotting away. We called all kinds on contractors to look at the porch and offer an estimate--they came and we never heard back. I guess the job was too complicated. It was complicated. We wanted to keep the original historic look and yet do the job with a lasting quality craftsmanship. We turned to Thumbtack and found Gene Steele, from G.A. STEELE CONSTRUCTION. Gene Steele seemed to recognize immediately the needs and values we wanted to work with. We were pressing against the winter weather, starting the job the last week of October--that ended up being our biggest obstacle, but many other changes had to be made as we encountered the work. Concrete, cement footing for the porches piers, rebuilding the piers, and the entire rebuilding of the under the porch supports. Gene worked with it all. When the Polar Vortex hit in December it was obvious the work would have to hold off, yet he secured a site to pre-stain the decking so when a day opened up it was ready. I found Gene incredibly knowledgeable and flexible. He has promised to come back out in the Spring to check on a few items and stain the deck one last finish coat. The entire cost was over the original bid, but there was good reason and was not a surprise to us since he kept us in the loop about the problems. We feel so much more secure now that our porch is restored, crafted, and simply looking good.

Gene Steele is by far the best contractor I have ever hired. I am currently in Dallas, and Gene is proceeding with a major fix of the rotted structural framing beneath my home in Illinois. He keeps me updated daily with phone calls and photos, and promptly responds to my inquiries. He is Honest, fair, highly experienced, cost-conscious and extremely empathetic to homeowners' worries and concerns. I am on my second project with Gene and hope to keep him busy for quite some time.

Gene was amazing! He was one of the first contractors that contacted me once I submitted a job on thumbtack, this was seriously within minutes of me posting. He stood out because he was the only contractor that was genuine regarding how he was going to handle the actual quote of the job. He offered to talk over the phone. Within minutes we were discussing my situation and during that call he answered all of my questions, addressed all of my concerns, and he was just super knowledgeable. I mean I can not say enough about how dependable he has been. He completed the work within weeks of getting ahold of him and thats saying a lot because he had to work around Thanksgiving and Christmas! He also kept me fully updated with the progress of all the work since I live a distance from the property that needed the work done. The countertops came out 100 times better than I had ever imagined, and the shower he took the time to correct the pre-exsisting issues to ensure that when he put in the new shower we would not have reoccurring problems like we had previously! I highly recommend Gene!

I discuss the wants of the potential customers and try to get a clear understanding of the scope of the project. Then I offer my opinion based on my experiences and Then discuss a range of honest pricing so they have a realistic expectation of the cost.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
I have more than 20 years of carpentry experience starting out as a laborer and working my way up to formen and then going on my own to try to deliver quality workmanship at Fair pricing.
How did you get started doing this type of work?
A number of my uncles are in the trades and my father spent many years in the trades so it sort of been in the family all my life.
