It was my great pleasure to have been a student of Chris Armstrong for an intense 10 hours of instruction over one week. I have had instruction from 5 different tennis coaches and Chris is one of the best. Chris is an outstanding teacher, with a passion for helping tennis students achieve their goals. First of all Chris listened to what my goals were for the week. He observed my game and began to develop a plan for my instruction. And from the very first day he began a highly focused drill progression to build the skills he felt would benefit my game the most. As the week went on Chris listened to my feedback. Previous tennis instruction professionals I encountered came with their set of stock drills and merrily ran me though them, I left sweaty, but no better. Chris took my feedback with his observations and being sensitive to my physical state adjusted his plan for me in a positive meaningful way each day. The most amazing thing Chris did during the week was maintain HIS discipline and focus. He knew what my game needed and that simple two part skill was the main component in every task he put me through. He added variety and complexity to the drills, yet every drill was based on my developing better footwork and a better more complete preparation phase. We discussed a few other things he observed that would be helpful for me, but the structure of our practice never wavered. Chris has the flexibility to work with a variety of learners. He recognized my competitive desire to improve and taught me at that level. However, on one of my days I was able to observe Chris working with a beginning high school player. His passion and attention to detail was evident as he instructed the young man. And with both of us he left us feeling empowered. At the end of my week with Chris I had such positive optimism about my game, not just from the work we had done; but from the way he valued my improvement. The subtle valuable positive feedback he gave constantly as I worked made it so easy to work hard. I am a 25 year high school teacher and a 30 year basketball coach; I know great teaching when I see it. Chris is a great teacher. He has a quick eye for detail, he knows how to develop proper progressions to advance skills, and he flexibly stays the course to achieve the best for his students. He positively acknowledges progress and gives points of improvement as instruction never with harsh words. The bottom line is I feel transformed after a week with Chris and cannot wait to get another chance to work with him in the future. Glad he has moved closer to me in Palm Desert.
