About this pro
15 years in business
I work with a lot of vendors who keep our retail operation chugging along. For commodity items, I want an order taker. For other business issues, I highly value someone who listens carefully then offers fresh options to solve my problem. Bruce is that guy – cheerful and always ready to help, he questions my needs and ideas thoroughly. I count on him to help me think clearly and creatively. We used to do our advertising, promotion and signs ourselves, or trust printers and fabricators to just make something nice. Bruce not only represents us with outstanding design, but also handles the little production details. We now get more feedback on our presentation and fewer problems getting it done. Thanks to Bruce our visual branding now appears on everything we create – employee t-shirts, gift certificates, even store fixtures. The customers’ experience is heightened, helping to bring in a steady stream of referred business. I highly recommend his expertise for your business. Jackie Secor Secor Farms, IncSep 5, 2018
I’m spoiled now. Working with Bruce, I get to relax and have fun too. Relax because he simply nails it, quickly - project requirements get met with a fresh and appropriate style. Fun because he can keep up with me, is good humored, and really cares about me and my endeavor. As an entrepreneur, I used to bootstrap everything, including DIY visuals or using Fiverr. The results were passable but unsustainable and risky. Once I tried Bruce and his process, I no longer worry about any visual communication issue. As my go-to designer, thought partner and creative conspirator all in one, he’s definitely a factor in my landing more and better customers. I imagine he could work his magic for anyone. +++ The layout below has so much information on it. Bruce figured out an elegant way to present it all.Aug 13, 2018
I had the pleasure of collaborating with Bruce extensively while we created and shipped 3 release versions of an iOS game and a related Sticker Pack for iPhone and iPad on Apple's App Store over a period spanning more than two years. We needed to create a visually rich environment that would render well across all iOS device form factors and we turned to Bruce to help achieve our goals. Before bringing Bruce onboard we had the technical skills and game design concepts. After, we had a team that could both conceptualize and realize our creative ideas. All of our collaboration during this time was done remotely, and working with Bruce in this type of virtual work environment went very smoothly. Bruce was responsible for creating an extensive inventory of high-quality illustrations and graphics, including designing and executing our App Icon and other critical branding assets. Bruce can take rough conceptual descriptions, outlines, or sketches of ideas and turn them into concrete, visually delightful, production-ready assets. Bruce contributed to the overall creative process of our product design, participated in regular production and design meetings, contributed to creative brain storming sessions, solution planning, usability, and general UI design requirements. Bruce brings a critical, analytical eye and creative perspective, which helps everyone improve and be more successful in efforts he contributes to. Bruce also participated in and led marketing and branding campaigns, notably including campaigns on popular social media platforms where he contributed the idea, the message, the design, and the assets. Bruce made a real difference in our ability to successfully visualize, design, create, execute, and ship our product. Bruce Colthart is the best among graphic guys. He's a good listener and his attention to detail is what makes him the best in his professionAug 30, 2018
I ran a non-profit educational organization and I hired Bruce to give a whole new look to all of our publications. He did a lot of homework and asked a lot of questions to get a feel for our mission and our audience. He made our publications more accessible, informative, and professional. They also were eye-catching and distinctive, raising our profile in our field. He gives wise counsel, is low-key, flexible, and holds himself to very high standards.Aug 20, 2018

- What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)? Most project descriptions require more details in order to give you a useful proposal. I'm not being cagey; I simply need to understand exactly what you're after. No worries though – a 15 (or so) minute call should give us both the information we need about whether or how to go forward.
- What is your typical process for working with a new customer?Even before the proposal is accepted, I try to converse with the client: first to understand what exactly how the need arose. Some clients want simple obedience from the designer; others appreciate a collaborative relationship. If the proposal is accepted, then I typically confirm the timetable and milestones, and spell out the responsibilities of the designer and of the client. The goal is to proceed smoothly and methodically once started. I see part of my job as challenging you (respectfully), not so that you'll simply accept my solution but to make sure you've considered certain factors. Clients willing to dig deep for the 'truth' of the situation usually benefit the most, knowing their project is well-rooted in reality.
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?25+ years experience serving small businesses and individuals, including 9 years in a corporate communications environment. I'm also experienced hiring other designers, illustrators, writers and fabricators.
