Introduction: I love playing the cello and sharing music, and I want you to fall in love with it too! My goal with each student is to meet you where you are and tailor each lesson to your individual strengths, needs, and desires. My first goals in our first lessons are: to learn why you'd like to take cello lessons, to find out any musical history you have & gauge what level you're at in your studies, and to discover what type of learner you are so I can best describe concepts and connect with you personally. My hope is that our work together will continue to grow your love of music, help you find comfort and confidence in playing the cello, and help inspire you to become as creative and efficient as possible in your practicing. I have a wide array of private teaching experience, from students age 6 through 75, including beginners through pre-conservatory level students. As an active performer myself, I am always trying new things in the practice room and finding new ways to explain concepts to help my students.
I love getting to know my students and watching them grow, both as people and as artists, through our time together. I love seeing my students challenge and overcome obstacles (technical, musical, and personal), and watching them transform through their musical pursuits.

Working with Arlen is a pleasure. Inspiring one to create music, she delves deeper than merely fixing a technical problem, but focusing on phrasing the music in such a way that the problem fixes itself. For instance, practicing phrasing a line with just the bow eliminated some technical problems that I thought were caused by my left hand. She also could see how my breathing would sometimes cause tension in my body, creating an unequal sound production. Focusing on one aspect of technique at a time, even breathing, has improved my practice times and interpretation. Arlen inspires one to use technique to create art and not be satisfied with only technique. I recommend her highly!!

Playing the cello has been on my to-do list for a number of years, but I never had the time while I was working. I retired and last winter miraculously found ARLEN HLUSKO. Even though I am not musically inclined, Arlen has been a constant source of power and inspiration. Not every gifted musician is a gifted teacher. Arlen is both! She is highly professional and patient .....yet constant with words and ways to improve. She has the innate ability to impart the knowledge a student requires.
Arlen has chosen a path less traveled by musicians, and if I should win a BIG lottery, I'd be honored to buy her a cello as wonderful as she is.

I have been a teacher for 41 years, so I have some sense of quality in instruction. My experience with Arlen has been excellent. I never played a musical instrument, didn't read music, am not a "natural," and took up the cello rather late in life. Arlen provides close and individualized instruction. She is professional, patient, clear, always willing to work out problems, able to see my weaknesses and work around them. She provides close and individualized instruction. Arlen is such a gifted teacher whose positive instruction has helped my son become enthusiastic about playing cello. She's a very patient instructor who takes the time to explain things in such a way that it is tailored to my son's needs. Arlen's love and knowledge of cello has provided an inspirational learning environment that is motivational & fun. My son is so excited to play with Arlen each week.
