Introduction: Alan Tilley has been teaching violin for ten years. He holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in violin performance from the University of Michigan and Indiana University. While at Indiana, he worked privately with Prof. Mimi Zweig in the famed IU String Academy, teaching students as young as three years old. His teaching is influenced by the Suzuki tradition, in addition to the pedagogy of many of the other great 20th-century teachers, such as Gingold, Galamian, and Dounis. Alan co-founded the Anchorage Chamber Music Festival in 2013. Over the past few summers he has given hundreds of lessons, chamber music coachings, master classes, and performances at this venue in Alaska. "My area of expertise is giving students a strong, reliable foundation in technique that ensures a lifetime of joyful, tension-free music-making and allows students to reach their full potential. Message me anytime if you're interested!" -Alan

Alan Tiley was my daughter's helper at the pre-college String Academy, Jacob School of Music in Bloomington Indiana. My daughter needed some help since we just moved from Canada and were new to the String Academy. Alan helped my daughter with all her etudes, scales, Wohlfahrt, shifting exercises, double-stops and her solo pieces. Alan will be a great teacher. He is patient, is very calm and also has a high level of technique. He knows exactly what the child need to focus so they can improve faster. Mostly important, he has lots of knowledge about the most important thing for a child learning violin: knowing how to practice. We asked him to help our 3 children to give us some tips on how to practice and he has helped us SO much. Bravo! We will miss you so much! We wish you great success!

Our son has benefited from Alan's instruction at the Anchorage Chamber Music Festival - summer intensive program for a full week in 2014 and 2015. He is an incredibly kind, patient and sincere individual who went out of his way to help our son's ability, technique and confidence. He was equally patient with we the parents who know very little about music, making us feel confident in guiding our son's musical education to date, and offering himself as someone we can contact with any questions about anything, any time. Alan is a wonderful role model for the type of human we hope our son to become; extremely talented yet so unassuming; obvious confidence yet with zero arrogance. His intonation is outstanding; you can single out his sweet tone when he is playing in chamber groups as we have had the privilege of attending more than eight performances. One final observation might be that he expresses sincere joy when playing music; often times unable to suppress smiles when the music is flowing beautifully. When we bumped into Alan on the campus of Indiana University for String Academy 2015 he went out of his way to make us feel welcome and well-remembered from the weeks in Alaska, and again giving very positive encouragement in all we do. We just wish we lived in the same city as Alan because we would love him to be a part of our son's continued musical and personal development.

Alan began teaching violin to our three year old. Not only is he an excellent violin teacher but he has the patience necessary to meet our kid where they are. We are more than pleased with Alan's ability to connect with our child and give them space to learn at their own pace. I highly recommend his services, especially for young children.

It's wonderful to have Alan as my violin teacher. He is both professional and fun. Alan is really kind, and makes me feel relaxed to play. He always gives me great exercises that allow me to see improvements almost immediately. After months, I find myself making progress much quicker than I ever imagined. Sometimes Alan also gives a short improvised and beautiful playing of great pieces, which makes the lesson really pleasant. Highly recommend!
