Dog Wild San Diego
About this pro
Co-founders Kristen Watkins and Justine Matthews created Dog Wild San Diego to bring their experience as professional zookeepers out of the zoo and into the dog park. Their deep understanding of animal behavior allows them to offer their clients a higher-level of dog walking – one based on helping each dog express their unique personality in a safe and structured environment. From poodles and pugs to heelers and hounds – inside the chest of every loving dog beats the heart of a wolf looking to reconnect with its wild side. Dog Wild San Diego is here to help them find it. Former zookeepers Kristen and Justine created Dog Wild to offer dog owners an alternative to the current trend towards national dog-walking services and apps. One that focuses on professional-level animal care and a more specialized approach to dog walking built on a foundation of animal behavior science and husbandry experience. Their unique background in zoology, conservation, rescue, and rehabilitation taught them that a dog walk is much more than exercise; it's a chance for canines to engage their senses, perform their dog-specific behaviors while decreasing anxiety and stress. That's the Dog Wild difference: trained professionals who help turn an ordinary walk into a chance for your dog to walk on its wild side.
Customers rated this pro highly for work quality, responsiveness, and value.

She was able to study plenty of animal behavior at the dog day care she worked at in college, taking care of 40+ off-leash dogs a day in a fast-paced environment. Her animal career continued on after college, working as a dog walker, primate caregiver, kitten nursery technician at the San Diego Humane Society and eventually a Zookeeper at the San Diego Zoo working with monkeys, lemurs, otters, and more. Justine studied Ecology and Environmental Biology at the University of North Carolina at Asheville, and soon after, completed her Master’s degree in Biology. She has worked with multiple conservation organizations across the U.S. and Africa like Palm Beach Zoo, San Diego Zoo Global, Cheetah Conservation Fund and Penduka Trust in Namibia, Africa. She has over five years of professional shelter experience at San Diego Humane Society working with domestic pets, in wildlife rehabilitation and wearing many different hats. She is also a part of the Special Response Team assisting in disaster response across the United States – most recently assisting the ASPCA and CDC with an influenza outbreak in the felid population in NYC.
