Introduction: When approaching an instrument, each student learns in their own way. My style of teaching is based around individual personalities and goals to achieve the fastest possible development, and ensuring that the activities of the lesson include enough fun to keep ongoing lessons interesting. Ms. Sakanyan is the first and best piano teacher I ever had! She welcomed me with open arms which made me feel ecstatic going to her class every time! As a 16 year old, she really had the patience and calmness with the little knowledge and skill I had at such age. Her way of teaching made each lesson unforgettable. She used imagery that complimented the proper piano technique, which made it easier for me to understand. Sometimes I would get a little anxious because I didn't want to disappoint her, but she was always understanding and sweet. I never felt judged, instead there was a very calm vibe which really made me pumped and excited to learn more and more. Truly the experience I was hoping for (and got). I loved every lesson!

I have had the pleasure of working with Astrik as my piano instructor and coach. I played the piano for a long time before starting graduate school. After my practice had lapsed for more than a decade, I decided to get back, regain and refine my technique, and improve certain things that weren't as good as I wanted them to be. Astrik patiently works with me and recommends pieces and exercises that would help me improve my technique. I admire Astrik's open minded approach to music making as she is eager to hear my opinion and interpretation of the music I am working on. Then, together we try different approaches, discuss them, and decide how to move forward. This way, music evolves from one session to the other, it matures, and it becomes a refined and meaningful piece of work in the end. She is a knowledgeable musician, an avid pianist, a patient teacher, and a courteous and wonderful person.

I took hour-long, weekly lessons from Astrik for over a year. I had no previous piano experience. Astrik is a great teacher who could be patient and encouraging while still keeping me focused on solid fundamentals. My rate of progress was faster than I could have hoped at the start! A big part of this was Astrik recognizing and adapting to which pieces were inspiring to me, while still keeping a balance of styles and techniques. Astrik is also an extremely talented player and very well educated. It was really helpful that she could instantly sightread any piece I brought. Any theory questions could be answered as deeply as I was interested in and with a lot of good context and texture to relate it to other concepts and pieces. Logistical reasons meant I had to switch teachers and my current teacher was immediately impressed with my progress, hand position, etc. I owe all this to Astrik.
