Introduction: I work to ignite a passion for writing and learning in my students. It's more than just mastering the fundamentals, my students acquire skills that carry them throughout life. Everyone needs to know how to speak, read and write well. It is the bedrock of communication. It telegraphs intelligence, education, competence, and even character. Young students to old can learn tips to improve in the short term no matter what their goals or professions. My favorite aspect of my work is to watch the light come on in a student's eyes when their first breakthrough occurs. Learning to write better brings confidence and a sense of personal empowerment. I work hard with each person to make our experience together a positive and fulfilling one. A student can, with my help, improve his or her writing skills significantly. If committed to the process he or she improves even more. I've been a writer and educator for the past two decades. Works of mine have appeared on the stage and screen. My essays have been published in Salon, Alternet, and literary journals. I work to ignite a passion for writing and learning in my students. In what way, or ways, did your screenplay writing improve after working with Amy? Amy helped me learn to delve deeper into my characters to form a more complex and more interesting protagonist or antagonist. She encouraged me to explore the character’s flaws that highlighted breaks in their strengths. What is the main thing Amy taught you about your writing? Amy has taught me that writing is fun work. She has shown me through rewrites of my work that I can find new ways to explore a character, describe a scene, make the whole project better from new insights What’s Amy’s strength as a writing instructor? Amy’s has a knack for making the writing process less complicated by breaking it in to small, actionable steps that leads to a final master piece.

My writing improved from being someone who had big ideas for tv and films to actually having a pragmatic plan writing those ideas into reality. From bi-weekly meetings we started with my premise line. Then as the months went by we worked on my beat sheet which was strengthened into a feature length screenplay I am working on right now. I was surprised at the independence and growth I gained from working with Amy. She would look at the beginning of the year with me via video conferencing and emails, listen to my goals (i.e. I want to build a screenwriting portfolio that consists of a tv spec, original pilot and a feature length screenplay) and she would break down the weeks with sizable writing exercises that would piece together my screenplay and tv script pieces. I feel great inspiration from watching movies and want to produce movies that move others as well..but sometimes you need a "coach" to help you get from Point A to Z. Starting a writing project can be daunting and it's difficult to "get your sneakers on, tie the laces and start running." I now feel empowered with the tools to produce my stories from conception to screen. I have already finished a tv spec, pilot, essays and working on a feature length screenplay. The main thing Amy has taught me as a writer is the balance between the artistic process as well as being successful in the industry. That honing the artistic process and building a strong body of work will attract the industry professionals that will want to work with me. She does a trustworthy job of moving both these processes simultaneously. Like most artists I juggle a lot. I have a day job, I am an actor who works on various shoots, takes classes and auditions for big opportunities all while working with Amy to realize my dream of becoming a show runner and director where screenwriting will be a vital tool. Amy has a gift for tailor making a program that fits the unique individual. Despite my very busy schedule, her efficient and tailor made syllabus has encouraged me to write regularly, little by little a day which has added up to a strong writing portfolio.

Recently, due to downsizing, I found myself without work. My company reduced their workforce by nearly half. I took that time to look at my skill set and I decided I needed to grow and retool. I really wanted to focus on my communication skills: writing, verbal and even public speaking. I was looking for a communication specialist who could jump in and put together a practical guide that would help me measure my progress. Amy did all that and more. She assembled a curriculum designed to fit my needs and set markers so that I could scale the learning curve quickly. One of the things Amy always says is that good communicators must be their own best editors. She helps her students identify their weaknesses and work through them quickly. Under her I learned how to write better, develop more succinct business proposals, communicate more effectively and clearly in interviews, meetings, and the like. Perhaps most impressively I’m growing into a better public speaker. And did I say this process has also improved my interview skills? I have a clear game plan when I go into the interview and I am much more confident. Additionally, Amy showed me how to manage my social media portfolio and how to grow an online following—something most employers want to see no matter what your background these days. Amy is worth her weight in gold. I will continue to utilize her and recommend her to anyone who will listen.

Amy is all about focus. That's what I gained from working with her on several different writing projects: a better understanding of how to focus my work. Amy cares about the unity and clarity of the final product, and she's passionate and thorough in her guidance toward those ends. With Amy, you're asked to consider what each sentence adds to the whole. She hates waste and has a keen eye for it. Through working with her, I've developed a better sense of writing as communication - how to get an idea across, how different readers will interpret different words and concepts, how editors and publishers will judge writing in ways the novice writer might not be prepared for. I think of myself as a more astute writer for Amy's guidance, with a clearer understanding of the place my writing can have in the world. But the best thing about working with Amy is getting to discuss writing with someone who cares about the craft in a more than superficial way. Amy isn't just a teacher; she's a scholar and a stylist, a creator and a critic. Her knowledge and interests cover a wide range of topics and disciplines, and she brings that rounded background to bear on each project she takes on. I'm lucky to have had her in my corner.

Amy rebuilt my resume from scratch. I wasn’t sure how to structure it or how to talk about my experiences. I also didn’t realize that I wasn’t highlighting some of my strongest abilities. Amy and I talked about my goals. She helped me focus on the job I wanted. From there she pulled out important skills and showed me how much I underestimate myself. Working with her really helped my confidence. I thought, wow, did I really do that? She also gave me tips and tools so I could tweak my resume down the line. I loved working with her. She’s fun, smart, and laid back. She gets the job done and is fast and focused. I think the most important thing I learned was that I wasn’t showing off my strongest assets. We talked about how to interview and she coached me on how to talk about my resume. For her, everything is a story. She taught me how to tell my story during an interview using situations that showed how I excel as a manager and leader. As I go through interviews and rewrite cover letters for different jobs, I plan on using Amy as much as possible. Thank you Amy!
